THE SPORTING BLUES AND OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN SPORT AWARDS

On Friday 26 March four of our students were invited to the MCG where they were recognised for their outstanding achievements in Sport.

The Sporting Blues and Outstanding Achievement in Sport Awards are the highest accolades awarded by School Sport Victoria.

I am delighted to announce that Will Kay (Year 11), Connor Hayes (Year 11), Lewis Sellinger (Year 10) and Tara Bajan (Year 12) were selected for these awards.

Will is an outstanding Volleyball player who while representing school has won Silver and Gold medals at the Vic Open, Beach Volleyball State Cup and the Victorian State Cup. Will also represented Team Vic at the School Sport Australia Championships where the team won a Bronze medal. Will has been selected to be part of the Australian Volleyball Academy based at the Australian Institute of Sport. Internationally, Will has represented Australia in Thailand as part of the U17 National Junior Squad and has played games in Canberra against touring teams from New Zealand and Japan. Will’s Volleyball achievements go from strength to strength as does his willingness to give back to the school. Will is an ambassador for the Volleyball club inspiring younger students by assisting in the coaching programs.

Connor is a keen Squash player who received a scholarship to Kooyong Lawn and Tennis Club. This allowed him to travel around Australia to compete in State competitions and across Europe to play squash tournaments. Connor also competed in the Scottish and British Squash Championships where he placed 81st and 11th. Connor recently placed 4th in the Australian Junior Championships for the U15 and is ranked 2nd in the state and 10th Nationally for U17 boys. Whilst not playing Connor runs junior sessions for his club.

Lewis is an excellent Cricket player and has captained the school team for a number of years. Through Lewis’s exceptional play he was selected to represent Victoria in both their indoor and outdoor teams. After the conclusion of the U15 cricket National Championships Lewis was selected in the Australian U17 squad.

Tara is an avid dancer and has experience and expertise in a wide variety of styles. Tara was nominated in the Girlfriend magazine: 'Top 25 Most influential Australian Females' under the age of 25. This article appeared in the December 2019 edition of Girlfriend Magazine.

She was also named the 'Best Emerging Dancer in Lyrical/Contemporary 2020' by The DanceWriter, who then wrote an article about her dance achievements.

Tara won the Australian 'Rainbow' Dance Competition, where she was awarded a paid trip to America to compete in their USA Finals.

Also, she was the Dance Life Unite Virtual competition champion, winning 'Overall Highest Point Scoring Act' with a perfect score of 100.

Tara was then scouted as a dance assistant for one of the largest Australian companies 'The Dream Dance Company', for their upcoming dance workshops across Australia.

In addition to this Tara has also choreographed and performed in 'Act Now Speak Later Virtual Concert' as a guest act, to raise money and awareness for cancer.

On top of her performance achievements Tara is a leader in the school community and delivers her own classes at various dance and calisthenics schools.

Congratulations to Will, Connor, Lewis and Tara on their exceptional achievements. You are true ambassadors for Sport within our community.

2021 KINGSTON CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the Year 7 Boys Tennis Team who are the 2021 Kingston Champions.

The boys travelled to Aspendale Tennis Club on Casual Dress day to play the Final against Mordialloc Secondary College.

All the matches were long and hard fought with every point counting.

Ultimately, McKinnon came through with a victory 5 sets to 1.

Special mention to Ilan Elbahoer who was a valuable member in the weekly Round Robin but absent on camp for the Final.

They now progress to represent the Kingston Division at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Finals on Friday 7 May at Dendy Park.

YEAR 8 SOFTBALL

On Friday 19 March the Year 8 Girls Softball Team travelled to Farm Rd to play Beaumaris Secondary College in the Kingston Division Championships.

The team was off to a great start with Maddi Stancheva hitting a home run, and securing 3 additional runs for the team. Alice Hollingsworth then went on to do some stellar pitching to secure 3 strikeouts in a run. However, Beaumaris came back in the 2nd innings taking us to a tie break situation. With only 10 minutes left to play, the game was decided in a 5 hit tie break innings. With some excellent fielding the opposition were held to only 3 runs. Thanks to a massive hit from Sophie Maxwell our 3rd batter, the game was won and the team were crowned champions of Kingston!

A huge congratulations to the team who now play in the Southern Metro Regional Finals in term 4.

On Monday 29 March the Term 1 Senior Round Robin took place at a variety of venues across South East Melbourne. Congratulations to the Softball and Baseball teams who won through without playing a match.

SMR SWIMMING MEET

McKinnon SC was represented at the SMR swimming meeting with 24 outstanding swimmers who had progressed their way through the recent Kingston Division.

With the grandstands full at MSAC, it was a pleasure to watch these talented swimmers in action over the course of the day.

With McKinnon champion Will Sharp finishing his school swimming journey at the end of last year it seems like we have replaced him with the very promising Leo Park (Year 7) taking out three individual SMR titles (50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke).

Leo was also involved in the winning 4x50m freestyle relay team along with Toby Christrup (Year 7), Alfie Davies (Year 7) and Neo Yan (Year 7).

Oscar Whitney (Year 10) took out two titles (200m and 400m freestyle) as well as three other seconds for the day.

Finally, Daniel Sidur (Year 8) managed to take out the 50m breaststroke.

Well done to the entire team who swam their hearts out. We had ten events that we came 2nd in so it could have easily been an even more successful day.
