Music News

Dr Andrew Butt

While the Semester 1 Concert Season is drawing to a close, we have appreciated a number of performances over the past two weeks that have showcased some of the exceptional music making happening at the College this year. On Thursday 26 May, Marist Jazz Night featured all of the College’s Big Bands, as well as a very special guest performance by Shannon Marshall (Trumpet/Flugel Horn/Voice). All ensembles are to be congratulated on their performances, well done to all students and staff. An extended thanks to Shannon Marshall for his contributions, playing alongside Big Band 1 for Freddie Hubbard’s Little Sunflower, as well as sharing an eclectic performance of Jazz Standards to end the concert. Please find a link below to the concert recording.

Last Thursday evening, June 2, all of the College’s String and Choral groups made their way into Brisbane City’s St Stephens Cathedral, for a special concert in the picturesque, spiritual heart of the city, which also provided fantastic acoustics for the genre. This year saw the amalgamation of this event with the Chapel concert, featuring Marist Voices and String Ensemble. It was fantastic to see the development across the year levels - congratulations to all students and staff involved.

Well done to all bands who performed at the 2022 Battle of the Bands after the College Walkathon on Sunday 5 June 5. This year’s event featured a high standard of performances, also showcasing some great original music. 2011 Old Boy, James Gatling (WAAX) judged this year’s event, awarding; Third place: Miss Mardy (Danny O’Rourke, Max Hodge, Tom Doherty, Kyle Bedford) Second place: The Search (Sam Mead, Louis Van Winden, Baxter Melrose, Sam Patterson, Rohan Sweeney, Jeremy Vanderbyl) and First Place: Everso (Alex Gibson, Tom Horton, Ruben Darwin, Sam Weinert, Will Fitzgerald).

In Week 7, the Marist College Music Department also hosted Studio Concerts, a number of Creative Industries Week Workshops and had students represent the College as part of the Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP). Congratulations to the following students who participated in SHEP; Lewis Atzeni, Lachlan Christie, Cullen Fitzgerald, Julian Lewis, Darcy Mahoney, Jordan Pratt, Jack Rosenberg, Zach Watts and Andrew Woodward. Guitar Ensemble and Wind Orchestra 1 are also to be congratulated on their performances at recent Primary and Secondary College Assemblies.

2022 Marist College Ashgrove Blue & Gold Concert

All members of the College community including Old Boys, Parents/Guardians, Siblings and Friends of the College are invited to be involved in this concert which is to be held in Draney Theatre on the evening of Thursday 28 July (Week 3, Term 3). If you are an instrumentalist or vocalist and are interested in being involved please contact the Music Department via email music@marash.qld.edu.au.

The concert traditionally concludes with a large scale combined orchestral and choral work and we are after as many voices as possible (particularly female!). Further information regarding rehearsal date and time(s) will be communicated to registrants via email in the near future.

The first Blue & Gold Concert was held in 2006 following the opening of the Molly and Len Draney Theatre in the previous year. The Concert has given the Music Department an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture that exists within the wider Marist Ashgrove music community. Over the years the concert has featured Old Boys and current students as soloists, performing a wide range of works from composers such as Joaquín Rodrigo, Antonio Vivaldi, Gabriel Fauré, George Gershwin, John Rutter, Ralph Towner, Bob Mintzer and Thad Jones.
