From Your P&F

Triumphant 2022 MCA Walkathon

What a glorious day it was on Sunday for the 2022 MCA Walkathon - the P&F’s major fundraiser and family bonding event. The College family put on a show of strength and unity for our trek through the Gallipoli Barracks. Thank you all for joining in the fun and contributing to this enjoyable day.

After a month of inclement weather, which made for some very challenging course conditions, we had the perfect day; powered by over 150 volunteers ensuring the event was enjoyed by over 1200 students and 500 parent/sibling walkers who then enjoyed watching 36 students participate in the mighty Battle of the Bands at the main oval.

The Red Frog sugar hit at the outmost Medical Post was an absolute delight to those weary walkers questioning whether they could complete the walk. We are sure that the consumption of over 2000 Red Frogs helped provide the energy that saw everyone complete the course and arrive back safe and sound!

Funds Raised

It’s not too late to contribute funds to the Walkathon. The contribution link will remain open for another week so you can make some more contributions after telling your war stories and exploits of the day to your friends and family.

For those boys that could not make the day there will be a Catch-up Walkathon this Friday arranged by the school.

I am pleased to report that we have currently raised more than $65,000 that the P&F will be gifting to the College to put towards projects that will benefit all the College family and visitors.

Volunteers and Event Organisers

What a wonderful feeling it is to belong to a college family that contributes so much. Events like our MCA Walkathon only succeed through the effort and selfless contribution of time and commitment by its family members.

We had over 150 enthusiastic volunteers committing to the event. Our volunteers – to whom we are truly grateful – were everywhere.

  • 45 course volunteers; College parents and College staff (including our wonderful Australian Defence Force and Qld Police Service parents) guiding and assuring the safety of our walkers throughout the course.
  • 90 McMahon Oval volunteers: ticketing; cooking; and serving our starving walkers.
  • 12 Hospitality students making coffee or helping with canteen.
  • Student photographers capturing those magic moments.
  • Our fantastic music department that made the Battle of the Bands come to life.

Thank you to all involved in the event planning and coordination consisting of representatives from the P&F, the College and the Gallipoli Barracks. Through many dedicated meetings and interactions, we have built strong bonds that will hold us in good stead for future Walkathon events.

Sincere thanks go out to Marist parent Jon Pollard LTCOL who was our critical link between the Barracks and the College/P&F; Bruce McPhee and Madeleine Tong who worked tirelessly with the P&F every step of the way, and all of the P&F, parents, College staff who contributed and offered support along the way. We thank you all for your leadership, positivity and continued focus on values, community, and the future of this very special MCA Walkathon and the strength it brings to the College family.

To the whole College family - Thank you everyone for a wonderful day, your contributions, and your positivity. We are truly a strong Marist family.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Jim Gordon - President - MCA Parents and Friends Association
