Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Congratulations to our successful Cross Country team who won our sixth AIC championship in a row last Wednesday at Curlew Park. The commitment, hard work and team first mentality of the whole squad proved to be the difference as Marist was successful in 13 years, 14 years, 15 years and Open as well as second in 16 years and third in 12 years. It was an outstanding effort from the entire team who should be very proud of their efforts. The commitment to training and hard work was evident and ultimately rewarded on the day. Thank you to co-ordinator Mr Mitch Reid, Head Coach Mr Shane Ward, and the entire coaching and support team for your leadership, support and guidance of the boys.

As we head in to the last weekend of the Term 2 sports the College acknowledges and thanks the Year 12 boys for their efforts over the years, many of whom have played year on year since Year 5. I wish you all the very best for your final matches this weekend in the blue and gold. This week we have focused on match reports for the open rugby teams in their last home days, next week’s newsletter will highlight the open football teams’ final matches.

This Saturday we travel to St Patrick’s College for a whole round of fixtures at Shorncliffe for their Back to Shorncliffe Day. St Pat’s are raising funds for the Darkness to Daylight Domestic Violence Program. They will also have students from St Pat’s and St John Fisher collecting donations for the Darkness to Daylight organisation and would appreciate any donations.

Football

Last Saturday saw Marist host St Peters Lutheran College. After playing SPLC in a pre-season trial and losing 4-1 the boys were apprehensive going into the match. They should not have been. In what was by far the team’s best performance of the season, the team won 1-0 to break the shackles for what has been a challenging season. Well done to the boys and coaches.

Across the board it was a strong day for Marist with a lot of good victories that once again demonstrate our strength as a college- our depth. The competition for places at Marist is well and truly alive and this is never more obvious than in our Year 7 teams who won their collective matches 25-3 overall against SPLC.

It was great to see our youngest football teams perform so well with four wins from our 5A and B and 6A and B teams and a collective 29-1 goals for and against. All Year 5 and 6 teams were undefeated on the weekend.

Chess

The 1st IV went down 10-6 on Friday night however both the Senior A and Senior B teams had strong victories that highlight our depth in the senior teams. St Peters won both intermediate matches with a draw and a Marist win in the junior matches.

Rugby

After a strong day overall for Marist against St Peters Lutheran College and many supplementary matches, as SPLC do not have a lot of depth in rugby, unfortunately, the 1st XV got off to a slow start and were never able to make up the difference, going down 25-10. Team of the week goes to the Third XV who defeated Ambrose Treacy College 1stXV 14-7 in a tough and resilient performance to maintain their undefeated season so far.

1st XV 10-25 SPLC 1st XV

Wearing the cerise and blue, on what was the Rosalie round, the boys were hoping to get their third win in a row against an evenly matched St Peter’s side. Unfortunately, poor discipline and a lack of possession saw us start the game on the backfoot. St Peter’s capitalised on this taking a 15-0 lead early in the game. After the slow start the boys finally found their rhythm with left-winger Cody O’May diving over in the corner, off the back of some gutsy pick and drive efforts from forwards Jack Billing and Nick Gullo, to make it 15-5. Despite this, a St Peter’s try just before halftime saw them take a comfortable lead into the break, leading 22-5.

After half-time the boys came out firing, hoping to run down the lead. Dominant ball running and some front-foot football, lead to winger Tom Howard showing off his electric speed and dazzling footwork as he crossed the white line early in the second half to make it 22-10. The boys fought hard, finally seeing their fair share of possession and territory. Unfortunately, off the back of a few costly errors and St Peter’s dominance at scrum-time they worked their way back down into our half. Awarded a penalty in front of the uprights, St Peter’s secured a 25-10 victory.

2nd XV 68-3 SPLC 2nd XV

The 2nd XV are still on track for an undefeated season and played one of their best executed games yet. We were strong against the park and no greater tribute to that than seeing Orlando Leavy and Sam Chetham score three tries each. Full credit to SPLC who without a bench played till the bell and contested every scrum. Captain James Boland led well, and the forwards responded. It was great to be able to give the bench a run and Frank Baker, Harry Thompson, Ryan Watts, Jackson Tallis, and Will Collins did not disappoint. It was so lifting to see Harry and Will score their first tries for us.

3rd XV 14-7 ATC 1st XV

The 3rd XV are still on track for an undefeated season. This is always a tough game for our thirds as they play the Ambrose Treacy firsts. Still, they made it even harder for themselves with an inconsistent performance. They struggled through a stop-start game under a barrage of penalties and execution errors. While always largely in control, it was never comfortable. Our effort areas at times were poor and meant we couldn't create that constant pressure. Coupled with struggles in creating quality opportunities and a misfiring set piece the opposition remained thereabouts for the whole game. Some notable good performances though. Fred Hassan good all day, lots of metres out wide and backed with excellent defensive efforts. Best game of the season also from Max Chapman, delivering some quality moments of grief to the opposition. Special mentions also for another consistent and hardworking performance from Henry Warren at 8, and some fantastic hitting from Pat Mahoney in the centres. The highlight of the match was another outstanding exhibition in our defensive lineout, which got to the point where ATC refused to have another lineout. Well done to all involved. Try of the day (there was only 2!) goes to front row Mikey Austin - chip and chase from 25m out. The less than graceful finish allows him to remain in the front row club.

4th XV 36-5 ATC 2nd XV

The 4th XV are still on track for an undefeated season. Tries to Baker, Lowis and Pogara. A slow start vs Ambrose Treacy's 2nds but once they figured out that they were playing rugby they put on a wonderful second half. The 12s led the way and the 11s stepped up in support. Nice moment at the end when stalwart captain Cooper Hafiz converted to end his time at Marist.

MCA 5th XV 34 d SLC 0

It was a much -awaited clash for the boys having only played other Marist teams to date. In windy conditions, the boys started confidently showing great cohesion considering the many player changes and positions prior to the run on. Forwards set a dominant platform with charging runs forcing the opposition to continuously retreat. Working as unit, the pack kept wearing down their opponent and when defence was required, heavy clean tackles blunted every attack. Getting excellent control at the break down led by inspirational work from Ryese Hart meant clean, quick ball for our slick backline. Excellent service from Harry Masel at No.9 allowed our backs to swing into action. The 10 to 12 combination of Reuben Jamieson and Alister McClure worked a treat as they explored weaknesses in mid field and created holes for our outside men. Best performance by far, well done!

Marist 6th XV & 7th XV

During the week we saw the mighty 6ths continue their winning ways playing against a barbarian team of 5ths and 7ths. A huge crowd of supporters turned up for the Wednesday afternoon game and Marist was the winner. Even the bumble bee made a run on!
