Antigone Thornton & Mim Suares-Jury

Big congratulations to Antigone Thornton (Year 10) and Mim Suares-Jury (Year 11).

Antigone has been selected in the SSV 17 and under Softball team to compete in WA next holidays, and Mim has just represented Victoria in the U18 Lacrosse National Championships, where the team was undefeated and Mim named MVP for the tournament.

As always, let us know if you're doing something special outside of school in the sporting arena - we'd love to hear about it!

End of Term 2 – Sport Report

Regional Senior Football Finals – Thursday 23rd June

MGC's senior footy team took on regional finals after brisking through the division round back in May. The team started off the day with a bye, meaning little-to-no break throughout their 3 games. We started the day playing Gladstone Park, they were a great team, but our MGC team finished on top with a 10 goal win. After a 10 minute, break we went into our next game against Eltham High School and had our best win all season. We had Mim Suares-Jury and Amelie Kamberis being our leading goal scorers of the day and of course, cannot forget Greta Nibali's insane snap goal from the boundary. Phoebe Marshall was winning majority of the rucks all day and we have to talk about the performance Harry Dennis put on.

Again, with a speedy ten-minute break, we went into our 3rd hour of game time for the granny. Our team captain or as we like to call her, Queen Abi Marsland gave her final pre-game pump up and we took to the field. Our sore bodies pushed through to the end of the game, but Montmorency ended up on top.

Overall great performance from all Year 11 and 12 girls and can't wait to be bigger and better next year.

NMR Intermediate AFL at CT Barling Reserve Reservoir - Monday 18th July

It was great to represent the school in the next round of interschool footy in hopes of making it to the grand final. Although the weather was freezing the day went pretty good. In total we played 3 games, the first two were against Gladstone SC and Scared Heart College. Both of which we came out on top and won. However, the last one was a challenge, up against St Helena SC. They were a tough side with a lot of grunt and unfortunately beat us. Nevertheless, the day was lots of fun playing with friends and people you don’t usually get to play with.

Some of our best players on the day included Keira Lindemans, Macy Tyrell, Lily Murrihy, Olivia Cavka and Hannah Dowling. Despite these individuals, it was a solid team effort all around to only come up short by a few points. Thanks to Miss. Gurr and Mrs. B for taking the team to Reservoir for the day.

NMR Senior Table Tennis at Coburg Table Tennis Club  - Wednesday 20th July

On this fine day, Mrs. B and our team of 6 strong table tennis players drove up to Coburg for the days play. This included Abbey Gao, JJ Te Maro, Bernice Liaw, Harshi Parikh, Scarlett Brydon and Leah Tzouvanellis who all came to play. The team played Hume, Lalor, Gladstone Park and Gilson in a round robin competition to determine the winner. Impressively, MGC were undefeated at the end of the competition! Barely dropping a set throughout all matches. The team will now play at the state finals on Wednesday 10th August in a couple of weeks. Well done senior team; an exciting opportunity awaits you!

NMR Junior AFL at CT Barling Reserve Reservoir - Friday 22nd July

On a sunny day up at Reservoir – Mr. Monaghan and Mr. Opt Hoog took our team of 22 strong players to CT Barling Reserve for a shot at a state qualifying final birth. Th year 7 & 8’s knew that they were in for a tough few games against Gladstone Park and Diamond Valley in our pool. After scouting both teams out in the first games bye, our students knew their roles against a quality outfit. First up was Gladstone Park. In this game it was our midfielders in Ruby Kaye and Ava Athanasopoulos that got us moving forward quickly. This created many scoring opportunities for our forwards and fortunately we finished the game 4 goals to zero by the end. The year 7 & 8’s knew how tough Diamond Valley were in their first game and we were put to the test in the second round. Once again, our engine room including Zara Lanigan and Coco Murrihy were able to repetitively break the lines and move the ball forward to our forwards in Coco Maslin who was able to convert. It was a genuine arm wrestle and the teams were going goal for goal. The final siren went and MGC came up 5 point winners at the final siren. We now were off to the big dance for a chance at a state final. MGC played Viewbank in the grand final. Our team had practiced shepherding and communication at the ball in the break to ensure that they were ready for a physical challenge. The game began and MGC were able to get multiple forward entries thanks to the midfielders and our forward flanker in Zara McIntosh who broke the game open. Giselle Cain was strong in her tackling all day. Lexi McCarthy took two strong grabs to convert twice in the first half. The 2nd half continued the same way with MGC converting more goals from many opportunities and at the final siren – MGC won 5 goals to 0. An amazing team effort by all players! The team will now play out at Ballarat in the quarter finals for state on Monday the 8th of August. Thanks to our wonderful coaches in Esme Keen and Lily Ellis for their instruction on the day!

AFL Half-time Auskick umpiring – Sport Action Management class (Year 10)

On Friday 15th July our Year 10 & 11 umpires attended the Marvel Stadium game between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs. After training to be an umpire in their SAMs class in 2022 and also 2021, Natalie Barone, Molly Hyland, Halle Rose and Milli Haynes relished the opportunity to head out with the half-time Auskickers and umpire their games to a professional standard. Each of the students were so kind to the young boys and girls, and developed quick bonds with them before the game. The officials were impressed with the level of care the four students took in their game day roles. Well done!
