Order in the House
Mark Monaghan (SVC 1980-85) recently visited his alma mater during a short visit to Hobart to celebrate his mother’s birthday. He is pictured above with College Principal, Jon Franzin.
Mark serves as MP for the Australian Labor Party in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for the electoral division of Fong Lim as of 2020. He is currently the 14th Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly after being elected on 23 May 2022 following the appointment of the previous Speaker Ngaree Ah Kit to cabinet.
Mark worked as a teacher prior to entering politics and has lived in the Northern Territory for over 20 years. He met his wife Michelle while working there and together they have three children.
During his teaching period in the Territory, Mark was College Director on Groote Eylandt, followed by being College Director of Jabiru and and Gunbalanya College in Kakadu.
After teaching, he spent time as the General Manager of Engineers Australia and then became a Regional Director of Pritchard Francis, an award winning Civil and Structural Engineering Consultancy.
Since 2018, he has served as Board Chair of Inspiring Australia NT – a body focusing on the promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).
Mark has an interest in horses. Since 2016 he has filled the role of Secretary of Racing Owners & Trainers Northern Territory. He was the part owner of Undue which won two group one races in 2006.
Mark’s two brothers - Steven (SVC 1977-83) and Eric (SVC 1982-87) – also attended the College.
