Emerging STEM for Women Program, May 2023

On the 31st of May ten Year 9 & 10 girls attended the Ecolinc Science and Technology Centre in Bacchus Marsh for the 2023 ‘Emerging Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) for Women Program’. The day consisted of a guest speaker, a range of workshops and a ‘STEM Careers speed-dating’ session where the students got to meet, talk with, and learn from, a range of women in STEM fields, as well as a range of higher education providers who could outline career pathway opportunities and courses available for students in the STEM fields.

Students participated in the workshop, ‘Medical Diagnostics’. They generated and analysed data to determine the causes of five patients’ symptoms.

They learnt how histopathology (examining blood smears), can diagnose a wide range of conditions, they analysed blood test results and tested for target substances in urine. Students learnt about inherited diseases and used gel electrophoresis to screen for genetic conditions. They diagnosed their patients and gained insight into the teams of scientists that contribute to medical diagnoses.

All of the girls represented our school with pride and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
