Koonung Swing Band 2019

Another year goes by and once again the Koonung Swing Band has gone on to continue its  role of providing students the fundamentals of  playing in an ensemble, that teaches team skills and the many disciplines in playing music.

The band consisted of students from Year 7, right through to Year 12.  Musical styles like 1930s/1940s swing are taught, as well as styles of Latin and Asian pop. The band has continued to be a flagship in helping to promote Koonung - both locally and on an international level.

Performances led by Henry Andrew have highlighted more of the skills in what it takes  to make such a group function. This year, the band was also enhanced by combining the talents of three drummers, Koetsu Sakamoto, Ryan McDonald and new-comer, Boxiong (Nick) Yang, to perform an original composition that I composed especially for them. The tune “Spine-Chillin’ Swing” blew the audience away at the College’s Spring Concert. In contrast, the vocals of Eric Zou showcased music from the Asian pop styles of China and Hong Kong.

I was/am very proud of the Koonung Secondary College Swing Band and especially send best wishes to exiting students, Koetsu Sakamoto and Kiri Lee who have just completed Year 12.

All students interested in joining the Swing Band, may contact me anytime to arrange for an interview:
