Music Week

Last week, Kilvington came alive with the sound of music, with more than 70 pieces performed as part of our Music Week events, including the Battle of the Bands, Lunchtime Concerts and Jazz Cabaret. It's been a great testament to the dedication and commitment of our music students and staff!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

We started Music Week with a bang, with the PVC Lawn hosting the annual Battle of the Bands on Monday. Thanks to all the students who performed! Congratulations to Charlie Sherman, Lachie Macdonald, Harry Shanks, Elijah Slavinskis and Archie Fifoot from the student-led band Plastic Trees on narrowly beating the Kilvington Stage Band to claim first place.

LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

Featuring students from as young as Prep up to Year 12, audiences were treated to some great performances across three separate lunchtime concerts during the week.

Congratulations to all the students who performed, and thanks to Junior School Music Coordinator Fiona Radford and our School Accompanists Kate Cole, Kay Cai and Sarah Bouquet for their support.

JAZZ CABARET

The Jazz Cabaret, held on Thursday 27 March at the Glen Eira Town Hall, once again transformed into a vibrant stage for students to showcase their talents.

The sell-out audience was treated to an exceptional blend of jazz, blues and soul performances, featuring our senior ensembles and select soloists. The evening was filled with dazzling melodies and captivating rhythms that left everyone in awe.

A huge thank you to all the staff, Music Captains and students for their tremendous efforts, both on stage and with the running of the event! Thanks also to all those who attended to support our musicians. It truly was a memorable evening!

Top Class Music performances

On Wednesday 19 March, VCE music students from Units 1 and 3 attended two inspiring concerts at the Recital Centre as part of Top Class Music 2025.

These concerts featured exceptional young musicians who had achieved outstanding grades in their VCE music performance examinations the previous year.

For our students, it was an invaluable opportunity to witness the dedication, skill and artistry required to achieve such remarkable results in music performance.

Music student accomplishments

Congratulations to Henry Hu, Year 11, for receiving the Associate of Music, Australia (AMusA) for piano! This award is granted to outstanding candidates in the field of music and requires both a practical performance and a theoretical written exam. The AMusA is equivalent to an associate undergraduate degree in Music. What an incredible achievement — well done, Henry!

Upcoming concerts and events at the University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne has a number of free concerts lined up during the holiday break, including performances by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM) Concert Band. You can find more details here

On Tuesday 3 June, the MCM is hosting a VCE Conservatorium Experience Day 2025, giving students an opportunity to come spend a day at the Conservatorium, experience pieces from the VCE Syllabus performed by Conservatorium teaching staff, and engage in repertoire, jazz and contemporary masterclasses. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
