Year Six

Dear Year 6 families,

We have had a fantastic start to the year getting to know each other and building strong relationships.

Reading

In Reading, students have continued strengthening their independent reading skills and exploring reading responses. We have been completing 20 minutes of reading each day, following this the class completes a reading summary about their text. Students have been reading a variety of poems and having in depth conversations about the poetic devices that have been included. We have explored the poet’s purpose and describing discussing why the author has included the features.

Writing

In Writing, students have been working on poetry and discussing the best part of them. Linking with our Unit of Inquiry and the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who We Are’, students have completed their first writing task: ‘The Best Part of Me’. Using their Writer’s Notebook for brainstorming, they then moved into the drafting stage, editing and revising and then publishing. They practiced descriptive writing to explain why they chose a specific feature that is important and makes them who they are.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, over the past fortnight students have explored the four proficiencies of maths. The four mathematical proficiencies, Understanding, Fluency, Problem-solving, and Reasoning are how we learn, apply, and communicate mathematical concepts. While looking at decimals we have practiced placing them in order using greater than, less than and equal to. We discussed the formation of decimals and the place value, from this we write the number in standard form, word form and expanded form. Students will continue exploring these as the year progresses.
