Year Four

Literacy

In Year Four Literacy, we have been exploring the idea of artefacts and how special objects can tell stories about who we are. After revisiting The Suitcase of Belonging, we reflected on meaningful items from our own lives and shared the personal connections behind them.

Through drawing, writing and discussion in our Writer’s Notebooks, we considered how these artefacts shape identity and our sense of belonging. A Gallery Walk allowed us to celebrate each other’s ideas and make thoughtful connections.

It has been wonderful to see students sharing proudly and speaking with confidence about what makes them unique.

Respecting Country: Our Acknowledgement of Country Learning

We have been learning about the importance of the Acknowledgement of Country. We explored the meaning behind a Welcome to Country and discussed why we show respect and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the land on which we live and learn.

Students made thoughtful connections about Australia’s history and the significance of acknowledging First Nations perspectives. As part of our learning, we created patterned leaves inspired by Indigenous symbols to form a collaborative wreath to display around our class Acknowledgement of Country. It has been wonderful to see students engage respectfully and meaningfully in this important learning.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, we have been exploring how to understand ourselves by identifying our strengths and areas for improvement. We introduced students to a SWOT analysis - looking at Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats - to help them reflect on their learning and personal growth.

Through guided discussions and modelling, students identified what they are good at, what they find tricky and the people or strategies that help them succeed. The children then completed their own personal SWOT grids and shared one strength they are proud of and one area they want to improve.

We are excited to continue supporting the children as they turn their areas for growth into strengths, building self-awareness, resilience and confidence along the way.

Numeracy

Over the last two weeks, we’ve been having fun exploring balanced number sentences! Students used many resources, including counters, cubes, and number lines, to solve problems with missing numbers, addition, and subtraction. We focused on key maths vocabulary to explain our thinking and reasoning. From partner challenges to creating our own equations and spotting patterns, it’s been wonderful to see students being communicators and reflective learners, enjoying problem-solving and explaining their thinking, while gaining confidence in making both sides of a number sentence balance - just like a perfect seesaw!

Unit of Inquiry

We’re excited for the next few weeks as we start our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are! In this unit, we will explore who we are, our relationships, what makes each of us unique and the values we hold. We will also think about people we admire and the qualities that make them inspiring. We can’t wait to learn, share and discover together!

Meet the Teacher

We are excited to invite the students and their parents and guardians to our Meet the Teacher evening. This will be a great opportunity to meet your child’s 2026 teacher, share important information about your child, and discuss how we can work together to support their learning and help them achieve their goals. Student will finish school at 12pm on this day.

Date: Tuesday 17 February

Time: Parents to book

Location: Year Four classrooms

We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year.
