Year Two

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2,
The Year 2 students have had a great start to the year so far.
Reading:
This fortnight in Reading, students have been building strong foundations for the year ahead. They have been practising independent reading and learning how to choose “just right” texts that match their reading level and interests. We have also explicitly taught guided reading expectations, helping students understand how to listen, participate, and engage thoughtfully in small group reading sessions. Students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring our class libraries, discovering new books, and choosing stories they love to read for pleasure. It has been wonderful to see their excitement in choosing different texts from our classroom libraries.
Writing:
In Writing this week, students have been developing their skills in both recounts and retells. They have been writing recounts about their weekends and personal experiences, learning how to structure their ideas clearly and in order. Students have also been learning how to read and retell a text, focusing on identifying key events and sequencing them correctly. This fortnight, we read the story Harry the Dirty Dog, and students worked together to sequence the events of the story before writing their own retells. This process supported their understanding of story structure and helped them build confidence in organising ideas for writing. It has been wonderful to see their growing ability to retell stories using clear, logical order and strong comprehension skills.
Maths:
In Maths this fortnight, students have been developing their critical thinking skills through working with increasing and decreasing number patterns. They have been learning how to recognise, continue, and create patterns, building confidence in number sequences and logical thinking. Students have also been solving problems using their place value knowledge and addition strategies, helping them to break numbers apart and think flexibly when working with calculations. These learning experiences are strengthening students’ number sense and supporting them to explain their thinking clearly and confidently when solving mathematical problems.
Wellbeing:
This fortnight in Wellbeing, students have been exploring the ten IB Learner Profiles. They have had the opportunity to discuss with their peers how they can demonstrate these profiles at school and at home, sharing their own examples and ideas. Students also engaged in creative activities, drawing pictures and performing drama acts to showcase the different learner profiles, bringing their understanding to life. These activities have helped students reflect on their actions, develop empathy, and practise being thoughtful, principled, and caring members of our school community.
