Year One

What a wonderful and busy fortnight it has been in Year One! Students are continuing to settle into routines, build independence and grow in confidence each day. We are so proud of the way they are approaching their learning.

Phonics – Inquiry into Words

In our Inquiry into Words, we have been exploring the Long E sound. Students have been learning the different ways this sound can be represented, including:

  • ee as in see

  • ea as in eat

  • y as in happy

  • e-e as in these

Through hands-on activities, word building, reading and writing tasks, students are strengthening their ability to hear, read and spell long e words. It has been fantastic to see them applying this knowledge in their daily reading and writing.

Writing

In Writing, we have been using writing seeds to spark ideas and inspire creativity. These prompts help students generate ideas, build vocabulary and develop confidence when beginning a piece of writing.

We are continuing to focus on stretching out words to hear sounds, using finger spaces, forming letters correctly and writing complete sentences.

Reading

Students have begun our class novel, which has created lots of excitement and rich discussion in the classroom. We are practising listening carefully, making predictions and talking about characters and events.

Our take-home readers have now begun going home. Please continue to read with your child every night and record this in their reading journal. Regular reading makes a huge difference in building fluency and confidence.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have been exploring patterns. Students have been identifying, creating and extending repeating patterns using shapes, colours, numbers and objects.

We encourage families to look for patterns out in the world — in clothing, nature, tiles, buildings and even food! Spotting patterns in everyday life helps strengthen mathematical thinking.

UOI

We are looking forward to an exciting few weeks as we begin our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are. This unit will explore identity, relationships and what makes each of us unique. We cannot wait to dive into this learning together.
