School Wide Positive Behaviour System

Term 1 Mentor Time Mini Lessons at Gisborne Secondary College

Throughout Term 1, as part of our School Wide Positive Behaviours Supports (SWPBS) Gisborne Secondary College has been delivering a series of targeted mini lessons during Mentor Time to support students in developing positive learning habits and strengthening our school culture. These short, focused sessions are designed to build consistency in expectations across the College while reinforcing our core values of Respect, Achievement, Innovation and Diversity.

A key focus has been the appropriate use of mobile phones and the responsible use of electronic devices in class. By setting clear expectations around when and how devices are used, students are better able to stay engaged in their learning. This directly supports our value of Achievement, ensuring classrooms remain purposeful and focused environments.

Mini lessons on arriving to class on time emphasise personal responsibility and readiness to learn. Punctuality demonstrates Respect for teachers and peers, while also maximising learning opportunities. Similarly, explicit teaching around the use of Blue Class Exit Slips encourages students to reflect on their learning, ask questions, and take ownership of their progress—an important part of both Achievement and Innovation.

Beyond the classroom, students have explored expectations around lining up appropriately at the canteen and accessing bathrooms responsibly during class time. These lessons highlight fairness, safety, and consideration for others. By promoting orderly and respectful behaviour in shared spaces, we strengthen our commitment to Respect and Diversity, ensuring all members of our community feel valued and supported.

These Mentor Time mini lessons play an important role in building a consistent, positive school culture. By explicitly teaching and reinforcing expectations, Gisborne Secondary College continues to empower students to thrive academically, socially and personally, living our values every day in every setting.
