Paddock to Plate

Gisborne Secondary has launched an exciting Paddock-to-Plate Inclusive Program, a hands-on initiative connecting food, sustainability, and cross-department learning. Designed for our inclusion students, this program offers a real-world approach to growing, preparing, and enjoying fresh, healthy food while fostering social connections and a sense of community.
The program is split into two cohorts: Year 7 and Years 8–9. Over the course of the year, students will start by growing produce in our school garden and then bring their harvest into the kitchen to create delicious dishes.
Our first session was a huge success! Year 7 students made homemade quick quiche using fresh parsley from the garden, while Years 8–9 crafted quick scrolls in both pizza and cinnamon flavours. Beyond the practical skills, students thrived socially, nothing brings people together quite like cooking and sharing food.
Students were actively involved in planning, suggesting what they would like to grow in the garden and cook in future sessions. Their enthusiasm, collaboration, and work ethic were inspiring, and we hope families had the chance to enjoy the fruits of their efforts at home.
This program not only teaches valuable cooking and gardening skills but also supports student wellbeing, connection, and engagement within the school community. We look forward to nurturing these skills and relationships as the program grows throughout the year.
See attached recipes if you would like to try them at home too.
Stay tuned for more updates as our students’ garden-to-kitchen journey continues!
