Maths Talent Quest @ KPS

As is tradition, this year students across Years 3–6 who demonstrated strong interest in mathematics were invited to participate in the Maths Talent Quest, run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria. 

Students had the opportunity to submit either an individual or team mathematical investigation based on a topic of their choosing. The open-ended nature of the competition encouraged students to pursue areas of personal interest while applying mathematical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and research skills. I have had the privilege of seeing some of these investigations and was delighted to see such a wide variety of investigations, with topics including: How many seats are there in the MCG? What if we all switch to Electric Vehicles? Creating a clothing brand and Why are monkey bars easier for some people? are just to name a few.  

Here are some of our students working hard on their investigations.

Participation in the Maths Talent Quest reflects Karoo Primary School's commitment to extending high-achieving mathematicians and providing authentic opportunities for students to explore mathematics beyond the classroom. To celebrate we had 70 students participate and 43 investigations which is incredible.

Each entry will be judged at least twice, and in some instances three times, ensuring a fair and rigorous assessment process. Awards are allocated based on the average judging score, along with the professional discretion of the judging panel. 

Every student who participated should be incredibly proud of the effort, perseverance, and high-quality work they demonstrated throughout the investigation process. Students awarded High Distinctions will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at RMIT in Term 4, where they will receive their certificates in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

We are immensely proud of all our students and the mathematical investigations they presented. We look forward to showcasing their work at the Maths Talent Quest Expo later this term and celebrating the final results. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS)

The Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS) is an annual, voluntary survey provided by the Department of Education. It gives students in Years 4–6 the opportunity to share their experiences and perceptions of school. The survey explores a range of areas, including learning, relationships with peers and teachers, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and students' overall sense of belonging and engagement at school.

Why is the survey important?

Student voice is a powerful tool for school improvement. The AtoSS has been conducted for almost 20 years and provides valuable insights that help schools plan targeted programs and initiatives to enhance student engagement, wellbeing, and learning outcomes. The data also supports the Department of Education in understanding trends and informing improvements across Victorian schools.

Analysing the Data at KPS

While our students have continued to grow and learn throughout the year, the staff at Karoo Primary School also embrace their own journey of continuous improvement. As reflective practitioners, we regularly analyse student data to celebrate successes, identify opportunities for growth, and strengthen our teaching practices.

One important source of evidence is our students' responses to the Attitudes to School Survey. Staff have worked collaboratively to analyse the survey results, looking for patterns, strengths, and areas for development. These insights help guide our School Improvement Team (SIT), inform strategic planning, and ensure that decisions are grounded in student voice. By listening to our students and responding thoughtfully to their feedback, we can continue to enhance the learning environment and support positive outcomes for every child.
