Spotlight on Learning

Dear Grade 3 Families,

Thank you to the parents who responded promptly to the Dietary Requirement Form regarding our 'Camp Rumbug' Day Camp which was sent out via PAM. If you haven't responded to the DIETARY REQUIREMENTS EMAIL please do so ASAP.  Students must bring fruit snack and morning tea for the camp. 

• Friday 14th August - Camp Rumbug long day camp. Leaving school at 7:15am SHARP and returning 5:30pm. More details coming soon!

In Week Four, Year 3 students continued building their knowledge and skills across all learning areas.

In Religious Education, students explored the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians, learning how the Holy Spirit guided and helped people to live like Jesus by making loving, kind, and faithful choices.

In English, students continued developing their spelling, handwriting, typing, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. They explored the morpheme of rupt, practised creating complex sentences, improved their reading fluency while responding to The Iron Man, and developed their understanding of information reports by planning and writing a body paragraph. Next week, students will be writing their own information report. Students may come home wanting to do some research in preparation for this!

In Mathematics, students continued exploring division and multiplication through equal group problems, using bar models to represent their thinking and solve problems involving sharing and grouping. Students have been working on using the VLS model to show mathematical thinking and reasoning.

In Integrated Studies, students continued the narrative structure of shadow puppet performances, considering how characters, settings, and events worked together to create an engaging story as they began planning their own performances. Students worked on storyboards, scripts and rehearsal.

In Auslan, students compared the structures of English and Auslan, exploring how Auslan represented time differently and identifying key differences between the two languages.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students continued developing their understanding that everyone has unique interests, preferences, and strengths while discussing the way that stereotypes affect us and everyone around us.

                     Learning for Term 3, Week 5

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students will learn about how the first Christian communities lived, prayed, and cared for one another, and how the Church continues their example today. They will also explore how the Eucharist helps build the Church and brings people together as one family in Jesus. Students will develop their understanding by retelling what the first Christians did together, recalling how Jesus shared the bread and wine, explaining why the Eucharist is important to Christians, and identifying ways they can help build a caring community.

English:

In English, students will focus on reading and spelling the homophones there, their, they’re and affect and effect. In handwriting, we will continue practising correct letter joins to build fluency and neatness. Our grammar lessons will explore dependent and independent clauses, coordinating conjunctions, and how to use them to write compound sentences. Students will also begin writing an information report, learning how to organise their ideas using a title, general statement, thesis statement, introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, before editing and improving their work.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will learn to solve 'times as many' division problems by representing equal groups using bar models. They will use these visual representations to identify the known and unknown quantities, develop efficient problem-solving strategies, and explain their mathematical thinking when solving division word problems.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students will have the opportunity to showcase their Shadow Puppet Performance after their very enthusiastic preparation of their groups' characters, script and rehearsal. 

Auslan:

In Auslan, students will explore how signed stories are a fun way to use their imagination and be creative. They will create and perform their own signed stories, applying their knowledge of Auslan signs to communicate ideas while building their confidence and expressive signing skills.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, we will begin the new unit, 'Positive Gender Relations'. Students will learn about what is violence, the different types of harm, how they can recognise early warning signs and why safety is important.

What you can do at home:

• Nurture daily reading by listening to your child read, discussing the text, and asking questions about characters, events, and key ideas.
• Practise multiplication and division facts through everyday activities such as sharing items equally, grouping objects, or solving simple “times as many” problems.
• Promote creativity and communication by sharing stories, practising Auslan signs, and discussing ways to show kindness, respect, and care for others in the community.

Important Reminders:

Fidget Toys

We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

Plastic bottle caps needed for this Term's Integrated unit! 

Please send washed plastic bottle caps (soft drink, milk etc) to school with your child whenever possible. Your support is greatly appreciated!

School Photos - any students who were absent or missed their photo this week are scheduled to attend the make up session on Tuesday 11 August, along with a small number of remaining sibling photo bookings.
