Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families, 

Year 6 students have had a busy week filled with a variety of learning experiences. We began the week with Reading Theatre, where students practised reading with expression, accuracy and confidence to build their reading fluency. Students also participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), a national competition that challenges mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills. They enjoyed working with Elephant Education, took part in School Photo Day, and gathered together for Mass.

During Mass, we reflected on Matthew 15:21–28, the story of the Canaanite woman, which reminds us of the importance of faith, perseverance and trusting in God's love. Despite the rainy weather, our Year 6 students continued to show respect, resilience and responsibility throughout the week, demonstrating our school values both in and out of the classroom.

Learning For Week 5:

Religious Education: Next week in Religious Education, students will continue exploring our inquiry, "How do our choices shape the story we leave behind?" by learning about the Eucharist. We will explore how Catholics believe the Eucharist strengthens us to live like Jesus and inspires us to make faithful choices in our everyday lives.  

English: This week, students will explore words containing the Latin root 'cede/ceed/cess' and develop their vocabulary through our class novel, Once. They will practise using apostrophes for possession, summarising texts using key words and paragraph outlines, and writing clear sentences using the conjunctions because, but, and so.

Mathematics: In Mathematics, Year 6 students will continue building their number fluency through daily practice. Students will focus on increasing their speed and accuracy by completing a series of questions within a set time, supporting confidence and fluency with number skills.

Performing Arts: Next week, students will explore how music communicates emotion and meaning by identifying musical elements, explaining how music influences an audience, and connecting music to stories and characters. Students will also develop their ability to communicate values and ideas through movement.

Auslan: In Auslan, students will continue developing their storytelling skills by using visual thinking, imagination and creativity. They will explore how signed stories can bring characters and actions to life by using movement, expression and signing to describe what is happening.

Social & Emotional Learning: This week, students will explore Gender Norms and Stereotypes through the Respectful Relationships program. They will develop an understanding of how stereotypes can influence the way people think and behave, while learning to respect and value the differences and strengths of others.

What you can do to help your child at home

• Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes each day and discuss the characters, events and themes in their book.
• Practise maths skills through everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, measuring and working with fractions.

Important Reminders

• Fidget Toys: We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Tuesday 11th August -Photo Catch Up Day for any students who were absent or missed their photo this week are scheduled to attend the make up session on Tuesday 11 August, along with a small number of remaining sibling photo bookings.

• Saturday 15th August - Confirmation Ceremonies (11 am and 2 pm)

• Monday 24th August - Book Week Parade at 9 am

• Friday 4th September - Father's Day Breakfast

• Thursday 17th September - Last Day of Term 3 for Students
