Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 1. Students enjoyed participating in our Funky Socks and Shoes Day, helping to raise funds for the Open the Doors Foundation. Thank you to all families who supported this worthwhile cause through donations and colourful footwear.

We also had our school photo day this week. The students looked wonderful in their uniforms and did an excellent job following directions and demonstrating our school values throughout the day.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students have been exploring the concepts of fair and unfair play. Through discussions, games, and real-life scenarios, they have been learning how to make positive choices, include others, and resolve conflicts respectfully.

In Mathematics, students have been applying their understanding of grouping, sharing, and skip counting to solve worded problems related to the Commonwealth Games. They have enjoyed using hands-on materials and visual representations to explain their thinking and develop their problem-solving skills. In Writing, we have been exploring Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Murphy. Students have been learning about the importance of welcoming people to Country and showing respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They have been responding to the text through discussions and written reflections, sharing their understanding of the story and its messages.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort students continue to show across all areas of learning and look forward to another wonderful week ahead.

Sincerely,

The Year 1 Team.

The week ahead:

Religious Education: Students will continue to learn about tradition and confirmation.

Writing:  Students will read Awesome Emu by Greg Dreise. They will talk about the lesson that Emu learnt.

Reading: Students will learn the split digraph i-e which makes the long/i-/ sound. The dash tells us that a consonant grapheme sits between the i and the e.

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

Gallery Image

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “How many altogether?” or “How do you know?”

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What traditions does your family, school or community celebrate?

Important Reminders:

  • Fidget Toys

We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

  • Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.

  • Can we please ask for a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident.

  • School Photos - any students who were absent or missed their photo this week are scheduled to attend the make up session on Tuesday 11 August, along with a small number of remaining sibling photo bookings.

Enjoy your weekend,
