Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Families,

This week, our Year 5 students enjoyed participating in Crazy Sock Day, helping to raise money for the Opening the Doors Foundation. It was wonderful to see so many colourful and creative socks on display while supporting this important cause, which provides educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.

We look forward to celebrating Mass with the Bethlehem community on Wednesday, 12 August, at 9:30 am in St Thomas the Apostle Church. All families are warmly welcome to join us as we gather together in prayer and celebration.

Learning in Year 5 for Term 3:

Religious Education:

Next week in Religious Education, we will learn about the prophet Ezekiel and how God called him to share His message. Students will explore ways to remain faithful to God, recognise choices that can draw us closer to or further from Him, and reflect by writing a short prayer asking God for strength to make good choices.

English:

In English next week, students will continue consolidating their information report writing by developing well-structured paragraphs and effective conclusions. They will also continue reading Convict Boy, using evidence from the text to strengthen their comprehension, infer meaning, and discuss how language and text features convey ideas.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics next week, students will focus on rounding numbers with more than two decimal places, building their understanding of place value and applying rounding strategies with accuracy and confidence.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies next week, students will explore narrative structures and the basics of puppetry. They will begin creating their own simple puppets while developing an understanding of how stories can be brought to life through performance and creative design.

Auslan:

In Auslan next week, students will explore how facial expressions help communicate character emotions in stories. They will identify different translations of the signs open and put on, and use their knowledge of English to plan and create simple sentences in Auslan.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning next week, students will explore peer pressure and recognise examples of gender policing in everyday situations. They will discuss why unfair expectations can be harmful and practise respectful ways to respond when they encounter them.

  • School Photos - any students who were absent or missed their photo this week are scheduled to attend the make up session on Tuesday 11 August, along with a small number of remaining sibling photo bookings.

  • Fidget Toys - We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

  • Camp to Mill Valley Ranch will be on 12th-13th October. Wednesday 14th October is a student free day for year 5.

  • Camp permissions are now available on PAM. Please complete the camp permission form as soon as possible. Within the permission form, you will find two linked forms that also need to be completed—one for camp activities and one for dietary requirements. If you are experiencing any difficulties accessing PAM, please contact our school administration team for assistance.

If you have any questions or concerns about camp, please don't hesitate to speak with your child's teacher.

Enjoy your weekend,
