Year 5/6 News

Literacy– Spelling and Reading

This fortnight, students have been exploring spelling patterns to strengthen both their reading and writing skills. They have been identifying base (root) words and recognising how prefixes and suffixes change a word's meaning. Alongside this, students have been practising their reading fluency, focusing on reading smoothly, accurately and with expression to build confidence and comprehension.

Writing– Poetry

Our creative writers have been having fun composing nonsense poems! Students have explored imaginative and impossible ideas, invented their own playful words, and experimented with rhyme, rhythm and descriptive language to entertain their audience. They have also revised their poems to improve their flow and humour before performing them with expression for their classmates.

Mathematics – Measurement

In Maths, students have been investigating length, mass and capacity. They have been learning to select the most appropriate metric unit for different measurement tasks and to measure accurately using a variety of tools. Students have also explored when using smaller units can provide greater precision in their measurements.
