Mary: A Woman of Courage and Faith

On last week’s Feast of the Assumption, we celebrated Mary's journey of faith and her special place in God's plan. The Assumption reminds us that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven, a sign of God's promise of eternal life. But before this glorious moment, Mary's life was filled with challenges, uncertainty, joy, and sorrow. Her example continues to inspire us today.

One of Mary's most outstanding qualities was her courage. When the Angel Gabriel appeared and told her that she would be the mother of Jesus, Mary was only a young woman. She did not fully understand how everything would happen, and she knew that saying "yes" could bring difficulty and misunderstanding. Yet she trusted God and responded with faith: "Let it be done to me according to your word." Mary's courage was not the absence of fear. It was her willingness to trust God even when the future was unclear.

Mary also teaches us what it means to be open to God's will. Throughout her life, she remained attentive to God's call. She accepted God's plan not because it was easy, but because she believed that God would guide her. In a world where we often want certainty and control, Mary's example challenges us to listen carefully, trust deeply, and be open to where God may be leading us.

Another important lesson from Mary is the way she was present for others. After hearing the angel's message, she travelled to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who needed support and encouragement. Mary did not focus only on herself or her own concerns. She reached out to help another person. Mary's attentiveness reminds us to look beyond ourselves and to care for the people around us.

At the same time, Mary did not disappear when life became difficult. She stood at the foot of the cross as Jesus suffered and died. Her presence shows us the importance of standing with others during their struggles. Sometimes we cannot solve a person's problems, but simply being there, listening, and offering support can make a profound difference.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, we are invited to reflect on how Mary's example can shape our own lives. Are we courageous when faced with challenges? Are we open to God's plans, even when they differ from our own? Do we show up for others in both their happiest moments and their hardest times?

Mary's life reminds us that holiness is not about being perfect. It is about saying "yes" to God each day, caring for others, and remaining faithful through both joy and suffering. May her example inspire us to live with courage, generosity, and trust, knowing that God is always present with us on our journey.
