VICTORIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORTS - INTEGRATED

As part of our integrated investigation into building and maintaining active communities this term, students participated in an incursion on Monday morning, run by the Victorian Institute of Sport. Students had the great pleasure to hear from Zali Ward, who officially became Hockeyroo No. 543, after being presented with a kangaroo badge after her debut appearance in February this year!

Zali talked about her journey as an athlete, her schedule, the habits she has to have as a professional hockey player, how she keeps her body and mind healthy, as well as giving tips to our aspiring Grade 3/4 athletes.  This was a great opportunity to hear from such a positive and active role model within our community!

LITERACY

Students have finished off their exploration of the mentor text ‘Our World: Life in Ardiyooloon’. We finished the term with some poetry based on our Mentor Text for this term and our senses.

Throughout the term students have also been introduced to the roles of Book Club and have been eagerly becoming, ‘Discussion Directors’, ‘Word Masters’, ‘Passage Pickers’, ‘Illustrators’, ‘Summarisers’ and ‘Connectors’. Students will take on these roles  and will form the basis of discussions with their Book Club groups throughout the year!

MATHEMATICS

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring all different strategies for adding and subtracting! Students have been learning using number lines, mountain jump strategy, adding on and counting back and using the vertical algorithm! Students have used concrete materials and visuals to support their learning!

Students have also enjoyed putting their mapping skills to the test, using directional language and grid references! They have also enjoyed playing with water as they learn all about capacity, how to accurately measure the capacity of objects using formal measurements. We're sure many of our students can apply these skills by measuring ingredients while cooking over the holidays!

STEM

This term we have been learning all about soil, rocks and minerals.  Over the last two weeks

we have focused our efforts on how rocks are formed, and how we descrive and identify different types of rocks, using their size, shape, texture, colour and grain and/or crystal size.

This week we were Rock Hunters and explored our school grounds to find a collection of all different rocks, including Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic rocks! We also recorded the colour, shape, hardness and lustre of different minerals!

WELLBEING

This term we have been focusing on help seeking and identifying who we can go to for help, how we ask for help and who we can help. We have also been working on naming our feelings and and how we feel in different Zones as well as how we feel towards others when they react unexpectedly in different in situations.  This is part of our ongoing work on the Zones of Regulation.

Family Holiday Ideas

  • Explore your neighbourhood and practise mapping different areas
  • Cooking as a family (always great for measuring ingredients and applying our capacity skills)
  • Board games night (always great to have the kids as the bankers or scorers, to utilise their money skills and addition and subtraction skills)
  • Visit the NGV and Museums Victoria websites to see what’s on (remember there is free public transport travel all throughout April)
  • Write some fantastic narratives and turn them into some stop motion magic using the free app!
