Enrolments

We continue to receive 2027 enrolment applications, with the majority for Year 7 commencement. We are following the Statewide 6–7 Transition Timeline used by mainstream schools. However, we still have a separate application process and eligibility criteria that need to be met. This ensures Heatherwood School remains focused on students who have a diagnosed Intellectual Development Disability (IDD), formerly referred to as a Mild ID. The process of enrolling a student at Heatherwood School is extensive, and we do this to ensure a smooth transition for the young person and their family. It also allows us to get to know the student in great depth before they arrive for their first day, with a number of adjustments already in place. We appreciate the time this takes families and schools but know that we are doing our best to set students up for success. The earlier we receive enrolments for the following year, the better placed we are to address issues such as workforce planning and class sizes across the school. Assessments

As part of my role, I oversee the process for students being reassessed throughout their journey with us. A reassessment may be requested for several reasons, including as part of the Disability Inclusion Profile Process; to review a nonstandard enrolment or due to the length of time since their last assessment. The assessment process involves collecting information from Classroom Teachers as well as consent and information from families. The information required from families will be sent home with your young person after you have been contacted for consent and made the referral. We appreciate your timely attention to completing these forms and returning them via email or in the student diaries.

Disability Inclusion

On behalf of Nigel Ross and myself, I’d like to revisit the purpose of a Disability Inclusion (DI) Profile Meeting. The DI Profile helps us know how to support your child better at school. We want to support your child to learn and take part in school. The profile will tell us what your child can do well at school, what support your child gets at school and whether your school can get funding. Funding is money your school gets to give extra support to your child. A profile meeting is where we complete the profile with you and your child. The meeting will be about levels of adjustment, which means how much support your child needs at school.
