Students in 7P Humanities recently had an exciting opportunity to step into the world of politics and experience how Parliament works during a special classroom simulation. The class debated and voted on whether the e-sports bill should become law, giving students a hands-on insight into the law-making process.
Taking on important parliamentary roles, Marlowe kept proceedings in order as Speaker, while Oskar, as Premier, delivered a speech in support of the bill. Emma, taking on the role of Opposition Leader, presented a strong rebuttal, challenging the arguments put forward.
Behind the scenes, Evie did a fantastic job as Clerk, while Xavier took on the role of Sergeant-at-Arms, helping bring Parliament to session and ensuring proceedings could begin.
The debate also featured thoughtful contributions from Amelia, Stein, Hugh, Hunter, Indi G, Tobias and Riley, who delivered speeches both for and against the proposed bill. Their arguments helped bring different perspectives to the discussion and encouraged students to think critically about the issue.
The experience gave students a valuable opportunity to learn how laws are made, how elected representatives debate proposed legislation and how a vote can determine whether a bill progresses towards becoming law. Students also explored how they can share their views and communicate their opinions to their local Member of Parliament.
A big thank you goes to the Parliament of Victoria Education team and their representative, Karl, for facilitating this engaging and educational experience. The session gave 7P students a memorable opportunity to experience democracy in action and discover how their voices can contribute to the parliamentary process.
