Year 9 GTAC ‘Outbreak’ Program at Booeegigat

Across weeks 5 and 6 of this term, each Year 9 Science class participated in a GTAC workshop where they had the opportunity to collaborate with real scientists from the Parkville research precinct.

In this program students considered the re-emergence of known pathogens in a globally connected world and investigated scientific and social strategies to identify and control the spread of pathogens.

Year 9 students had the opportunity to use sophisticated scientific techniques called PCR and gel electrophoresis to identify the exact virus that caused the outbreak and ELISA to investigate its transmission.
