Industry Expert from Metro Train visits VET Electrotechnology Students at Macleod College

On Wednesday 17th June and Thursday 18th June 2026, Macleod College was delighted to welcome Rod Duncan to engage with our 1st and 2nd year VET Electrotechnology students.

As part of the VET Electrotechnology program, students explore a range of industry topics including qualifications and career pathways, industry organisations, occupational licensing, and the many opportunities available within the electrotechnology sector. Rod's visit provided students with valuable real-world insights that complemented these areas of study.

Drawing on his extensive industry experience, Rod shared his knowledge of working within Metro Trains and compared the rail industry with his previous experience in the manufacturing sector at Toyota. Students gained a greater understanding of the different career opportunities available beyond becoming a licensed electrician, including the diverse pathways within large organisations and the importance of ongoing training and professional development.

Rod also provided students with an authentic perspective on today's workplace environment, explaining how multidisciplinary teams work together to deliver safe, reliable train services while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and customer service. His discussion highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, leadership, and continuous improvement in a modern industrial workplace.

The sessions gave students a valuable opportunity to learn directly from an experienced industry professional, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and current industry practice. Hearing first-hand about Metro's commitment to working as one team to deliver safe, reliable transport services gave students a deeper appreciation of the standards, culture, and professionalism expected within the rail industry.
