STUDENTS WRITING WORKSHOPS

During weeks 5 and 6, students were given the opportunity to participate in after school writing workshops which aimed to provide general guidance to students undertaking the planning phase of their writing.

The first workshop had a focus on general creative writing planning, with singular concentration on character development. Students were reminded of the advantage in knowing a character’s details and motivations thoroughly. They also worked on developing their own character and planning how their character would react to a series of simple scenarios.

The second workshop narrowed in on analytical and essay writing and placed particular emphasis on the collation, selection and evaluation of evidence from student’s prescribed texts. Students were also encouraged to give thought to using complex sentences when framing arguments, as well as being given advice on building cohesion across an entire extended written response.

Many thanks to the English staff who willingly volunteered their time to offer guidance to our students. Thanks also to parents and carers who organised transport for students at short notice. Most of all, many thanks must go to the students who participated in the workshops. Over 100 students were present over the two sessions and their enthusiasm and desire for improvement were evident throughout.

After the success of the first workshops, we will look to offer more to our students as the year progresses. Stay tuned for announcements.
