What Does Transdisciplinary Learning Look Like?
One question we are often asked is, "What exactly is transdisciplinary learning and what does it look like for my child?"
As an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and MACS school, transdisciplinary learning is at the heart of everything we do. Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, we help students make meaningful connections across different areas of learning, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Here's what this looks like in our classrooms:
Literacy with Purpose
Reading, writing and vocabulary are closely connected to each Unit of Inquiry. Students explore engaging texts, build subject-specific vocabulary, and write for authentic purposes that relate to what they are investigating.
Making Maths Meaningful
Every day, students participate in explicit mathematics lessons to develop strong mathematical knowledge and skills. Where there is a natural connection, these concepts are also applied within our Units of Inquiry, helping students see mathematics in real-life contexts. Not every unit has authentic maths connections, but when the opportunity exists, we make the most of it.
Learning That Connects
Students learn by making connections across subjects rather than seeing them as separate. For example, a recent unit brought together history, literacy, timelines, Religious Education and Reconciliation Week, creating a rich and meaningful learning experience.
Working Together Across the School
Our classroom and specialist teachers in PE, Visual Arts, Mandarin and STEAM collaborate to strengthen connections to each Unit of Inquiry. This ensures students
experience a consistent and engaging learning journey throughout the school day.
A Conversation Starter at Home
When talking with your child about their day, try asking:
- What are you reading or writing about at the moment?
- How did your learning today connect to your Unit of Inquiry?
These questions encourage children to recognise the connections they are making and help them share the deeper learning taking place in the classroom.
