Year 9 Drama
Ms Rossini's Report
This Term, a small group of Year 9 students have studied Drama, and it has proved to be a highly engaging and rewarding experience-particularly as many of the students were from an EAL background.
Throughout the term, students have completed a series of research tasks and collaborated with the Year 10 EAL English class to explore the themes of the play Twelve Angry Men, through an interactive drama workshop. This provided a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of character, conflict and perspective.
A highlight of the term was our excursion to Malthouse Theatre, where students were taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the venue. They had the chance to meet designers and theatre professionals, who shared insights into their creative processes. The set and costume workshops, were particularly fascinating, sparking great curiosity and enthusiasm among the students. They were even given the opportunity to try on costumes and participate in a hands-on drama workshop led by a local artist. To conclude the day, students enjoyed a delicious lunch at the theatre’s restaurant.
Back in the classroom, the Year 9 Drama class explored elements of Butoh theatre and incorporated these techniques into their performance of The Ghost of Iowa, a traditional Japanese tale of a vengeful woman betrayed by her husband. One of the greatest challenges - and achievements - was transforming classroom B5 into an immersive performance space, to bring this haunting story to life.
