SSV Eureka Senior Soccer

On Monday 20th April BHS took two teams (Senior Boys & Senior Girls) to the SSV Eureka Senior Soccer competition at the Wendouree West Soccer Reserve. It was the first cold drizzly day of the term so the teams were thankful for the long sleeve playing tops!  The Senior Boys had 3 matches against Beaufort Secondary College (9 - 0 goals), Mount Rowan Secondary College (0 - 0 goals) and Phoenix Secondary College (1 - 1 goals). Unfortunately the Senior Boys had too many drawn games and missed shots on goals resulting in a 2nd place finish behind Phoenix Secondary College.

The Senior Girls had an interesting day with their opponent pulling out the morning of the competition. The team had won without even stepping out onto the pitch! The Senior Girls will now progress to the SSV Greater Western Region Senior Girls competition at the Wendouree West Soccer Reserve on Friday 21st June.

The highlight of the competition was a surprise visit and coaching inspiration from Ballarat High School Principal Stephan Fields (pictured below). The Sports Department appreciates him coming along and supporting BHS Sporting Program.

SSV Eureka Intermediate Boys & Girls Soccer

On Thursday 30th May BHS entered an Intermediate Boys and Intermediate Girls team into the SSV Eureka Intermediate Soccer at the Wendouree West Soccer Reserve. The Intermediate Boys had to make their way through Pool Play games, followed up by a semi-final and then the Grand Final. In the Pool Play the team played Phoenix College (3 - 1 goals) and Beaufort Secondary College (5 - 0 goals). The two wins put the Intermediate Boys at the top of Pool B and placed in the second Semi-Final against the second-place team in Pool A (Mount Rowan Secondary College). The team continued its strong performances winning the Semi-Final (4 - 0 goals) and booked a place in the Grand Final against Mount Clear College. The Grand Final was a close affair with the Intermediate Boys victorious (2 - 0 goals) and crowned the winner for the competition.

The Intermediate Girls had a  more direct  journey playing only  two matches against Mount Clear College (0 - 1 goals) & Beaufort Secondary College (1 - 0 goals). The close match loss to Mount Clear College resulted in the team finishing in second place for the competition. The Intermediate Boys team will now progress to the SSV Greater Western Region Intermediate Soccer competition on Friday 21st June at the Wendouree West Reserve.

The school also had two Y12 students (Jorja Mentis  & Teal Lench) who umpired one of the grounds each for the day. Feedback from all schools attending was that they did a fantastic job.

SSV GWR Senior & Intermediate Girls Football

On Tuesday 21st May BHS made the long trip  to Pedrina Park (Hamilton) the new home of GWR Girls Football, for the SSV Greater Western Region Senior & Intermediate Girls Football. Both teams had considerable late student withdrawals so were significantly down on rotations for the day. It certainly didn’t make much difference as both teams went undefeated for the day! The Senior Girls had 2 matches against Murtoa College (52 - 0 points) and Monivae College (42 - 0 points). The class difference was obvious with the Senior Girls team not letting either of their opposition teams the opportunity to score.

The Intermediate Girls had a different path with competition including Pool Play matches and then a Grand Final. The Pool Play matches were against Mercy Regional College (28 - 0 points) and Warrnambool College (13 - 6 points). The two wins qualified the Intermediate Girls into the Grand Final against Horsham College (15 - 6 points) where the team came out victorious. Both teams have now qualified for the SSV State Quarter-Finals on Monday 12th August (Intermediate) and Wednesday 14th August (Senior) to be played here in Ballarat.

SSV GWR Intermediate & Junior Boys Netball

On Wednesday 22nd May BHS took our Intermediate & Junior Boys Netball team to the Blue Water Leisure Centre in Colac. The Intermediate Boys team played 3 matches against Colac Secondary College (4 - 11 goals), Warracknabeal Secondary College (8 - 18 goals),  and Cobden Technical School (12 - 14 goals). Unfortunately, the Intermediate Boys didn’t register a win but had a great time at the event.

The Junior Boys team also had 3 matches against Colac Secondary College (10 - 15 goals), Warracknabeal Secondary College (14 - 15 goals), Mercy Regional College (15 - 14 goals). The Junior Boys managed one win for the day and not leave empty handed. Junior Boys Netball coach Courtney McLean was excited for the future of the team and was looking forward to working with this group next year when they move into the Intermediate division.

SSV GWR Cross Country

On Monday 27th May BHS took 40 students on the annual trip to Warrnambool for the SSV Greater Western Region Cross Country at Reid Oval in what could have been the best conditions ever seen in Warrnambool! The course provides a wonderful track underfoot but some serious hills out the back of the course. The top 12 students of each age group qualify though to the SSV State Cross Country Championships.  All students who attended displayed enormous pride in running for the school and it was great to see so much light blue out on course. Congratulations to the following students who have all qualified through to the SSV State Cross Country Champions at the Yara Valley Race Course on Thursday 18th July:

  • Charlie Baulch – 1st 17-20 Years Boys 5km

Ballarat Associated Schools (BAS) Events

BAS Badminton Singles Championships

On Tuesday 21st May BHS entered 9 students into the BAS Badminton Singles Championships. This tournament brings the best school based badminton players together for a single player only championship. This event gives all players the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a solo effort. Students are selected into pools and fight their way through multiple opponents to qualify for the finals. Students play for the Brehaut Family Boys Single Championship and the Lemonade & Trophy Shoppe Girl Championship. It was a rocky road for our boys (Nuaym Haque, Jace Murray, Khade Olurendain) who met some seriously tough competition. Wins were hard to come by and unfortunately none of the 4 students were able to qualify past the Pool Play rounds. The girls section was a different story with two BHS students (Rose Triantafyllopoulos & Alex Galdman) topping two of the three pools and qualifying for the Semi-Finals. Rose & Alex both won their Semi-Finals matches to create a BHS v BHS Grand Final! The Grand Final was a very close affair with Rose taking the victory in the best of 3 series (21-19, 21-19). Rose is the first  BHS winner since Georgia New in 2019.

Students involved: Haylee Canfield Culley, Abigail Coventry, Alex Gladman, Nuaym Haque, Jace Murray, Khade Olurendian, Rose Triantafyllopoulos
