Merimbula Jazz Festival
Over the long weekend, the Swing Band attended the annual Merimbula Jazz Festival. As usual the band was very well received by audiences with many jazz lovers coming back to hear us every year.
The weekend’s performances kicked off with the usual gig at McDonalds with the band being heard across most of Merimbula. Other performances were at Club Sapphire, RSL club and the camp park. Again, we were invited to workshop with the Navy Band, joined this time with Lightening Ridge students.
A huge congratulations to the students for their wonderful work and exemplary behaviour over the weekend. Six of the ten students were either new to the band or in a new role and we would never have known it as they just behaved as professionals. A special thank you to James Newman for his superb leadership, and Rhonda and Wally for giving up their long weekend to drive us around all weekend.
East Gippsland Music Festival
All our school ensembles are rehearsing for the East Gippsland Music Festival which is in the last week of this term. Can families please give approval on Compass as soon as possible. If there are any issues with Compass, please phone the main office. A reminder to start planning your journey to Orbost for the Gala Concert. Contact the music centre if there are problems getting there.
UniMelb | Jazz and Improvisation Winter Day Camp 2026 for Year 9-12 Students - 29th June
UniMelb are inviting high school aged instrumentalists and vocalists in years 9-12 to spend a week on campus and explore the world of Jazz and Improvisation.
Meet like-minded musicians and develop your playing, skill set and creativity when approaching Jazz music and exploring Improvisation. The week of tuition is supported by a range of staff from the Jazz and Improvisation department at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Participants will engage in instrument/voice specific workshops, small ensemble playing, group singing, group rhythm/drumming, tools for improvisation, listening sessions.
The final afternoon will feature an informal concert of small ensemble performances to celebrate the week.
Please note registrations for this event will close on 11.59PM on Sunday 14 June.
