EXCEL Sport Program
SSV Intermediate Lacrosse State Finals
On Friday 30th August the Year 10 EXCEL Sport class entered 2 girls’ teams into the SSV Junior Lacrosse State Finals at Fawkner Park, South Yarra. After a four-week training block the students were well prepared for this event. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Patterson River Secondary College had both teams playing finals after finishing 1st and 2nd in their respective pools. Unfortunately, this meant the 2 Patterson River teams had to play each other in the semi-final, knocking one out. Patterson River Secondary College 1 won this game 12-5. Patterson River Secondary College 2 played off for 3rd place against Melbourne Girls College but ran out of legs and finished 4th in the State. Patterson River Secondary College 1 played against Mount St. Joseph’s in the grand final. The two teams had already played each other in the pool games and the result was tied 8-8. In the grand final game, the scores were locked for the majority of a gripping contest. Unfortunately, time ran out and Patterson River Secondary College 1 lost the State Grand Final 8-9 against a team of genuine lacrosse players. With only one substitute it was an outstanding effort and I couldn’t have been prouder of the girls in their final EXCEL Sport competition. State Runners Up is a fantastic achievement. Thank you to Jorja O for her coaching assistance throughout the day.
Year 7-10 EXCEL Sport Netball State Championships
On Tuesday 13th August, Patterson River Secondary College entered four teams in the Boys Netball Victoria School Championships from the Year 7-10 EXCEL Sport Program. The tournament was held at the State Netball Centre in Parkville and is open to Government, Catholic and Independent schools from around the state. This required all students to arrive at school by 7:15am and we did not return until 5:30pm. Throughout the course of the day, our teams played a total of 25 games, each lasting 14 minutes. It was a fantastic experience for all the students and while 3 out of the 4 teams did not make finals, our Junior Boys Blue team finished on top of their pool at the end of the preliminary rounds, qualifying for the semi-finals. This was a tightly fought contest that went down to the wire and unfortunately Patterson River Secondary College Blue lost 8-9 to St Paul’s Anglican Grammar. A fantastic effort by everyone throughout the competition. Thank you to Mrs. Brand for her tireless efforts throughout the long day, as well as Ciera D, Mia J, Meika L, Jorja O, Mali R and Molly S who also assisted with coaching and scoring.
