Kingston Koorie Mob

Acknowledgement of Country

Patterson River Secondary College is situated on Carrum Carrum swamp a site of historical and cultural significance. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of this area, the Bunurong and we pay our respects to their Elders both past, present and future, for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hopes of Indigenous Australians. We also extend our respect to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.

Koorie Term 3 Review

Wominjeka,

The Patterson River Secondary College Mob recently attended a day at the Danny Frawley Centre, sponsored by Headspace. The Mob participated in a range of activities, including a Marngrook Handball Competition. Marngrook, meaning ‘game of ball,’ was traditionally played by some Aboriginal groups in Victoria. Morning tea and lunch were generously provided by Headspace.

The Mob also viewed and discussed the documentary Point & Be Proud, which highlights Nicky Winmar's iconic stand against racism at Victoria Park in 1993. The Point & Be Proud program aims to raise awareness about the mental health challenges that can arise from racism.

After lunch, the Mob participated in a Wayapa session, a form of First Nations movement practice often described as Indigenous yoga. The session was a meaningful opportunity for participants to connect with Country through mindful movements based on traditional Aboriginal wisdom. The exercises were inspired by the natural world, with movements reflecting animals, the elements and the land. The Mob found it to be a grounding and enriching experience, as they deepened their connection to nature and their cultural roots. The session not only promoted physical well-being but also encouraged reflection on the importance of maintaining balance between mind, body, and spirit in everyday life.

The day concluded with everyone feeling rejuvenated and more connected, having gained valuable insights into the ongoing mental health impacts of racism, as well as the importance of cultural and physical wellness.
