Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers

We are excited for the fast approaching Lightning Tournament for our Tee-Ball, Tennis and Volleyball teams! This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their teamwork, sportsmanship and the skills they have been developing in PE and the matches we have been playing on a Friday morning against the other schools. Our world conquering tee-ball teams and the boys tennis team are undefeated and every team going is in with a real shot of success. We encourage all students to participate with enthusiasm, support their teammates, demonstrate sportsmanship and fair play and most importantly have some fun! We look forward to a wonderful day of friendly competition.

Our Year 5 students will soon be participating in NAPLAN testing. These assessments provide a snapshot of student progress in literacy and numeracy. We would like to emphasise the importance of the students staying calm and relaxed and understanding that these tests are designed to give us a picture of their abilities, rather than the be-all and end-all of school. NAPLAN is just one measure of learning, and we are proud of the consistent effort our students show every day in the classroom. A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and a positive mindset will help students feel prepared and confident.

Wednesday 11/3 - Writing

Thursday 12/3 - Reading

Monday 16/3 - Language Conventions AND Mathematics

Learning Focuses

Students are moving into descriptive narrative writing. Our focus will be on:

  • Creating vivid settings
  • Developing interesting characters
  • Using figurative language and rich vocabulary
  • Strong and creative adjective use and “Showing, not telling” through detailed description

We are excited to see students bring their creativity to life through engaging and imaginative stories.

History – The First Fleet

In History, students will be studying the arrival of the First Fleet and its significance in Australia’s early colonial history. They will explore:

  • Why the First Fleet journeyed to Australia
  • The experiences of convicts and settlers
  • The impact of colonisation

This unit will encourage thoughtful discussion and critical thinking about Australia’s past.

Mathematics – Multiplication & Order of Operations

In Mathematics, our focus areas include:

  • Strengthening multiplication strategies and fluency
  • Applying multiplication to problem-solving situations
  • Understanding and applying the Order of Operations (BIDMAS)

Students will work on solving multi-step problems and explaining their mathematical reasoning clearly.

We look forward to a productive and exciting few weeks ahead in Years 5 & 6. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey.
