Visual Arts / Culture Studies

In Visual Arts, students have continued to develop their understanding of line, shape, colour, and pattern through a range of engaging and creative learning experiences.

Foundation students completed their self-portraits and began drawing sunflowers using oil pastels. They explored different types of lines on each petal and used repeated patterns to enhance their designs.

Year 1 and 2 students completed their symmetrical self-portraits by adding a variety of lines and patterns to the background, strengthening their observation and design skills. They also began creating artworks focused on shape, line, and pattern.

Year 3 and 4 students created 2D cardboard sculptures inspired by Salvador Dalí’s melting clocks and designed surreal versions of everyday objects. They also learnt about artist Wassily Kandinsky and created concentric circle tree collages inspired by his use of colour and shape.

Year 5/6 students completed their miniature graffiti fences and began creating hybrid animal sculptures. They first constructed armatures using paper cups and masking tape, then covered them with papier-mâché in preparation for painting and adding detail.

Mother’s Day Wrapping Paper Design Competition

Our students have been invited to take part in a special community competition run by Westfield Southland to help design their Mother’s Day gift-wrapping paper.

Students are asked to create a design on A3 paper that features a repeatable pattern (rather than one large picture). These designs may be printed onto rolls of wrapping paper to be used during Westfield Southland’s Mother’s Day gift-wrapping activation.

Westfield Southland will select three winning designs, which will be turned into real wrapping paper. Each winning entry will receive a $500 Westfield gift card for their school. All submitted designs will also be displayed in the shopping centre during the activation period.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and see their artwork used in a real-world setting.

Students will have the opportunity to create their entries during school hours, We will be opening up the art room during lunch time next week for those that are interested to enter.

PE

Over the past two weeks, students in years 1-6 have continued to develop their skills and confidence of hockey. They have worked on dribbling, passing and shooting for goal. The dribbling has included dribbling the ball with the hockey stick individually, and then, as their confidence grew, they were challenged by dribbling with an opposition and playing games of knockout, where they had to protect their own ball while challenging their peers.

These games and skill development lead to games of numbers and finally a team game in the last session. It was pleasing to see all the kids try really hard, as hockey can be challenging. They all improved their skills and their techniques, and they all had a great time.

The Prep students have been working on teamwork and basic catching and throwing skills. They worked on passing to a partner and then rolling the ball to their partner. From these skills, they were introduced to the game of tunnel ball. This is a fun game, but it requires lots of teamwork. Initially, this can be hard for students to understand, but a great game for teamwork.

Interschool Sports

Over the past two weeks of teeball, we played Mentone Girls Grammar and Southmoor Primary School.

Our year 5-6 students continue to have a great time and try their best. We strongly encourage teamwork and encouragement, and I am very proud of the way they all play their games.

Mentone Girls had a girls teeball, tennis and volleyball team, so they played against our girls while the boys teeball and tennis had a practice session.

Our girls won both the tennis and teeball games and the volleyball team won 2 sets to 1.

Last week we played Southmoor.

Again it was a very successful day.

The boys and girls teeball teams both had good wins and remain undefeated.

The boys tennis team also had a good win, and they too are undefeated this term.

The girls tennis tried hard, but lost their game and the volleyball team had a tie.

With a curriculum day this week, we have one last game next week before the lightning premiership, which all students are very excited about.

Kingston District Swimming

On Monday 2nd March, we took 24 students to compete at the Kingston District Swimming competition against a very strong opposition, particularly Mentone Grammars team.

Our students tried their very best and did the school proud. Gus did extremely well finishing 2nd in both his individual events, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke. Well done Gus.

Congratulations to all students who participated.
