Year 5/6 News

Newsletter Week 10
Year 5
Literacy:
In Literacy, we are researching a tower. Our group was researching the Cori Taipei 101. It has one of the fastest elevators in the world and was opened in 2004. We found it interesting because we learnt more than we expected about the building.

Numeracy:
In Maths we have been learning about fractions and times tables. Learning about halves and quarters.

Inquiry:
We are learning about skyscrapers and what materials they are made from. We have been researching different skyscrapers such as the Burj Khalifa and the International Financial Centre. We then thought about materials we could use to make our own house.

Religion:
In Religion we have been learning about what makes each of us unique. We are all different but we all have similarities. Everyone has personal traits in common with each other.

Wellbeing: We read the book ‘Whoever you are’ which is about treating everyone equally. It had an important message that everyone is different and unique.

Year 6
Literacy:
We have been reading ‘Once’ and have been learning about the vocabulary from the book. We have been learning about the Holocaust and essay writing. We have also been focusing on our reading fluency while reading this book as a class. Now we are learning about the Gold Rush and researching information about the Chinese Miners and Peter Lalor in preparation for our Sovereign Hill Camp.

Religion: These are some of the posters we made about the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Maths: In one of the Numeracy groups this week, students were looking at expressing groups of collections as a fraction. These two groups did an excellent job.
Wellbeing: In Wellbeing, we have been learning about how to be an active listener during conversations. We made posters showing examples of Active Listening and Non-examples.

Special Events
Move over, teachers! This week some of our Year 6 students went into LC2 to teach some of our Year 4 students about St Patrick. They did a very good job.
Sustainability
Gardening club
During this fortnight in the gardening club, there have been weeds growing around our garden. So for gardening club, our gardening team has been pulling out weeds that have been growing around our school garden. The gardening club team has also been seeing some of the plants that we planted last term.
Sor’t
Sor’t is a competition where you earn points for putting rubbish into the correct bin and not having any contaminants in the bins. The competition started in Term 3, Week 1, and so far LC1 is winning with 10 points. The way you earn points is by putting it in correctly and also putting your bins in the hall. The learning centre that wins gets a trophy and a Fun Friday. You can put recycling paper into the compost bin but not the bottle bins.
How can you help
You can help by picking up rubbish around the school like chip packets and juice boxes. You can also help by not walking through the plants planted around the school, as it destroys plants and stops them from growing and getting ruined. Thank you for helping.
Welcome Rebecca to OLSC! With Tian moving into Digital Technology, we have been lucky enough to have Rebecca join our LC4 Learning Assistant team. The students are very much enjoying her helping in their Learning Groups and are looking forward to working with her for the rest of the year.
