Year 1/2 News

Welcome back, everyone, to an exciting new term! The students have returned from the holidays eager to learn and have been enthusiastic about sharing the wonderful experiences and adventures they enjoyed over the break. It has been fantastic to see their excitement and hear all about their holidays as we settle back into our Learning Group routines.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students have been learning about History. They have been exploring the concepts of the past and present, learning about the people in their families, and investigating how OLSC has changed over time. The students' had Tina D come and speak to them about the history of the school and how it has changed from when it was first opened till now. Through these experiences, students are developing an understanding of how people, places, and communities change while recognising the connections between the past and the present.

Literacy:

In English, the students have been reading The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name and Alma and How She Got Her Name. Through these engaging texts, they have been exploring the key features of a story, including the characters, setting, and plot. Students have identified what happens at the beginning, middle, and end of each story, as well as the problems the characters encounter and how these are resolved.

As their understanding has grown, students have explored character traits, discussing how a character's actions, words, and feelings help us learn more about their personality. They have enjoyed sharing their ideas and using evidence from the texts to describe and compare different characters.

Maths:

In Mathematics, the students have been learning about two-dimensional (2D) shapes. They have been developing their ability to name, identify, and describe a range of 2D shapes, using their features to explain how they are alike and different.

Students have enjoyed identifying 2D shapes in their everyday environment and recognising how these shapes are used in the world around them. They have also explored quadrilaterals, learning to identify and describe their unique features.

The students have been sorting and classifying regular and irregular 2D shapes based on their attributes, such as the number of sides and corners, and whether all sides and angles are equal.

Religion:

The students have been learning about St Francis of Assisi and how his life inspires us to follow Jesus. They explored what it means to be a saint, learnt about St Francis' life and qualities, and reflected on how they can show kindness, peace, generosity, and care for God's creation in their own lives. Students also wrote a simple prayer asking for St Francis' guidance to help them love others boldly.
