Year 3/4 News

Year 3 

A big welcome back to our Year 3 students! It’s hard to believe that we are more than halfway through the year! The students have had a successful first two weeks back, and we commend them on their ability to return to our regular school routines with ease.

Religion

In Religion, the students have been developing understandings on a unit called the Year of Matthew. They learned how to identify key healing miracles in Matthew as signs of Jesus' compassion and influence. They used a graphic organiser table chart to help them analyse each miracle. This involved identifying and responding to questions that included; who was involved and what they were doing, how Jesus responded, how the crowds responded, the scripture reference, and the title.

Literacy

After successfully studying the text Matilda in Term 2, the students have a new text which they have begun to read called ‘Off We Go Around Australia’ written by Roland Harvey. In the first two weeks they have enjoyed analysing the various illustrations of the text and finding humour in the characters actions. Additionally they have been using the text to learn about letter writing and have been drafting, editing and publishing their own postcard, imagining that they are a character in the text. Students have continued to develop their spelling skills using the PhOrMeS program, participating in daily sessions where they decode and spell both known and unknown words using a variety of spelling choices.

Maths

In Maths, the students have revisited the topic of Multiplication and Division for a second time this year. In our unit they have been focusing specifically on using the CUBES strategy to anaylse written questions by identifying the following:

Additionally, they have been using a variety of strategies such as the bar model, partitioning and drawing pictorial models to represent multiplication and division equations.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing Hour, the students have revisited the PBL Matrix, focusing specifically on the value of Respect. Students discussed our school mascot Sam and the message he shares with us on his posters around the school. We looked at ‘what we are doing well’ in relation to our OLSC Core values and ‘what we need to improve on’ moving forward.

Year 4

Welcome back to a very busy start to term 4, The year 4’s have been busy working on lots of new topics and have started their new novel study. 

Camp

As you will be aware Year 4 camp is fast approaching and excitement is building. We had a Year 4 meeting where we showed the students some slides about camp & talked about where we are going & what we will be doing.  All year 4 students were given a note about camp and need to return this as soon as possible. There will be an Online information session for parents on Tuesday Agust 11th @ 7pm. More info to follow via Dojo.

Religion

At the moment in religion the students have been looking at the hierarchy of the Catholic church and each person's roles to have a better understanding of different roles within the church. We have also stared to look at St Patrick and what his impact on the Catholic faith both here in Melbourne and World wide. The students have started to create a fact file on St Patrick. 

Literacy

We have started our novel study on the book Storm Boy. The students really enjoyed watching the 2019 movie, which gave them a better understanding of the text. As we have started to read the text the students have been focusing on the language that Collin Thiele used to describe the Coorong and Ninety mile beach. We have also looked at how Storm Boy has a deeper understanding of the environment from what Fingerbone Bill, a local Aboriginal and Hide-Away Tom taught him. The students have been able to use their prior knowledge of colourful semantics to create summaries and expand their sentences. 

Maths

We have been focusing on multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers, with and without carrying. The students have grown in confidence in answering these questions. 

Inquiry

We have all started our geography unit, with a focus on our local area where the students needed to locate on they My Google maps different places representing retail, farming, commercial, education, manufacturing, recreation and commercial. The students have become very familiar  and confident using this function on Google and they have also been able to mark all the capital cities around Australia, their Aboriginal names and chosen an appropriate landmark to represent the capital. 

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing Hour, we began the Semester by revisiting our whole school expectations. We reviewed our learning groups positive agreement poster, made adjustments and chose an expectation from the learning groups positive agreement poster they feel they need to work on.  We discussed why listening is important, 'it shows respect and  helps everyone stay safe, complete tasks efficiently, and work together smoothly.' We unpacked the quote: 'We have one mouth and two ears so we should listen twice as much as we speak.'

Tissues Please

It's that time of year when there are lots of sniffles & tissues are in high demand.  If you could donate a box of tissues to your child's learning group that would be much appreciated.

Reminders and Important Dates

• Students are to bring their laptops and headphones to school each day. Please make sure these are fully charged. 
• Make sure that all your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.
