Musician and Composer of the Year Evening
Last term, we held our annual Musician and Composer of the Year in the Black Box with many thanks to Laura Dusseljee, Louise Matthews and Rachel Levett who were our adjudication panel for the evening.
It was a wonderfully entertaining night with a wide variety of styles and performances, and I am delighted to let you know our winners for 2025.
Musician of the Year: Scarlett Abbott 12 Jones

Please congratulate these students when you see them, and also please congratulate all of our performers listed below. They did a wonderful job!
A huge thank you to Cheryl Long for her amazing accompaniment skills and Shari Williams for her impeccable organisation.
This year our composers works were presented in video format, and you can watch a short film about their creative intentions and musical creations here:
RUOK? Day Celebrations
On Tuesday 2 September, excitement filled the air as staff and students took to the netball court, all hoping to score the winning goal. A fun moment in the game was when Mr. Slater ran across the court with the ball in hand, making everyone cheer and laugh. Although there wasn’t enough time to play a fifth quarter, the match ended in a tie, 26–26.
The Staff versus Year 12 game was part of GCAG's annual RUOK? Day activities and has been a part of Girton culture for many years. RUOK? Day reminds us all how important it is to check in with each other, have conversations, and make sure no one feels alone. Asking RUOK? can save a life!
GCAG also hosted a barbecue on the day, raising much needed funds for Headspace Bendigo. A big shout out to Mr Simpson who assisted with the barbecue, wowing us all with his sausage sizzling skills!
Derry Derby 2025
The annual Year 11 v Year 12 Soccer match took place last term. This incredibly heated event saw the Year 11s triumph earning themselves the famous Derry Derby plate for the year of 2025. Congratulations to the students who organised and participated in the event.
Bendigo Cinemas Film Reviewers Co-Curricular
The Bendigo Cinemas Film Reviewers Co-Curricular began when manager Ron Bolitho from Bendigo Cinemas approached the school to form a partnership, looking for students to provide a youthful voice for promoting and analysing the films they screen in exchange for two students attending a complimentary viewing of one of the latest offerings every fortnight. Not to forget, the complimentary popcorn and drink we get to enjoy. Thank you, Bendigo Cinemas!
A group of media- and film-loving Senior School students were selected, with a pair attending a movie and producing copy for the Bendigo Cinemas website every two weeks. The partnership has been very successful with a number of reviews up on the Bendigo cinemas website at any time (link below). For the students, watching the movies provides not only a great opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of films, but also a real world opportunity to practise writing skills in media analysis, with a promotional bias.
Mrs Jacinta Jackson, teacher of Media at Girton, is the current SMC, and loves seeing a fortnightly film with the senior students as well as discussing the film afterwards, when the students decide how they will break up the task of reviewing between the two of them.
