Year 7G & Year 7J Art & Design: Ceramic Vases Exploring the Future of Coral Reef Ecosystems.

Year 7G and Year 7J Art & Design students designed and created ceramic clay vases exploring the impact of environmental change on coral reef ecosystems. Their artworks compare the vibrant beauty of coral reefs today with imagined future reefs 1,000 years from now if environmental challenges such as coral bleaching, climate change, and habitat degradation continue unchecked.

Inspired by research, visual references, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a creative investigation tool to predict future reef environments, students transformed their design ideas into ceramic vases using pinch pot and coil-building techniques, and sculpting coral formations and marine life before finishing them with colourful underglazes and a final glaze firing in the kiln with either a gloss or matte finish.

Through this project, students developed their ceramic skills while demonstrating how art can inspire awareness of environmental sustainability and the importance of protecting our oceans for future generations.
