First Nations News

The First Nations Committee at Aitken College is excited to begin a new year of learning, growth and understanding as we continue to promote reconciliation and celebrate Indigenous culture and history within our school community.

Welcome to Country

Friday 9th February marked a special occasion as we came together for a Welcome to Country led by Wurundjeri Elder Perry Wandin. This event reflects our community’s commitment to acknowledging and honouring the traditional custodians of the land on which Aitken College stands.

Sorry Day and International Mother Language Day

As we commence this new academic year, we are mindful of significant dates that hold cultural and historical significance for Indigenous Australians. This month we observe Apology Day (February 13th). This is a day to reflect on and acknowledge the historical mistreatment of the Stolen Generations. It is a solemn occasion that calls for empathy and understanding as we collectively strive for reconciliation.

On February 21st, we celebrate International Mother Language Day. This day encourages us to appreciate linguistic diversity and highlights the importance of preserving and promoting Indigenous languages.

Throughout the year, the First Nations Committee aims to organise events and activities to promote Indigenous culture and perspectives. We invite every member of our school community to actively participate in these initiatives as we work together towards a more inclusive and understanding environment.
