5/6 CLASSROOM
Over the past five weeks, we have been very lucky to have Mrs. P with us as our student teacher in Grade 5/6. She has brought so much enthusiasm and warmth to our classroom, and the students have really enjoyed having her as part of our class. We thank her for all her hard work and wish her the very best—we know she will make a wonderful teacher!
As part of our work with Once, students wrote information texts about Poland, focusing their body paragraphs on its geography, people and culture, flora and fauna, and connections with Australia. They began by taking notes from their research before turning their ideas into clear, well-structured body paragraphs.
Once' by Morris Gleitzman
We have now finished reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. The students were thoroughly engaged throughout the novel, with many eager to continue reading the other books in the series. They particularly enjoyed the characters, the suspense and the way the story encouraged them to keep reading. Here are some of their thoughts about the novel:
- Jaida: ‘My favourite part of Once was when Felix and Zelda were on the train because it was exciting and made me want to keep reading’.
- Sienna: ‘My favourite part of Once was when the children were hiding in the cellar and asked Felix to tell them stories because his stories helped them feel safe and forget about what was happening around them.’
- Archie: My favourite part of Once was reading about all the adventures Felix and the other characters had throughout the story because they were exciting and made me want to keep reading.
- Zoe: ‘My favourite character in Once was Zelda because she was brave, funny and caring. Even though she went through many difficult and frightening situations, she stayed strong and always had something interesting to say’.

Poland Paragraphs
Can You See Me? by Rebecca Scott & Rebecca Westcott (New Class Text)
Grade 5/6 has started reading Can You See Me? by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott, which follows Tally, a ten-year-old autistic girl, as she navigates school, friendships and the challenges of being misunderstood. As we explore Tally’s experiences and consider events from different characters’ perspectives, students will use the novel’s themes and events to support our persuasive letter-writing focus for the remainder of the term. They will learn to clearly state their opinion, organise their ideas into paragraphs and support their arguments with reasons and evidence from the text, while developing their understanding of letter structure and persuasive language.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have been learning to identify and describe different types of angles, including acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles. They have applied this knowledge by estimating and measuring angles at different points using a protractor, while developing their accuracy and understanding of angle size.
Religion
Recently in RE, students have worked on applying their understanding of conscience, wisdom, dignity, and respectful decision-making to a range of real-life situations. They explored scenarios involving peer pressure, inclusion, online behaviour, honesty, and friendship conflict, considering how their choices can affect relationships, wellbeing, and the wider community. Students also created comic strips to illustrate their scenarios and show how thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible choices can lead to positive outcomes.
Book Week
Over the past week, students have been designing new front covers for their favourite books. It has been wonderful to see their creative ideas come to life through so many eye-catching designs. The finished covers are now proudly displayed in the amphitheatre windows.
On Thursday, we visited the Rushworth Library for a Book Week story and activity with Amber. The students really enjoyed the visit, and we thank Amber for the time and enthusiasm she put into organising the session for us.
