The Grade 3-6 students have continued working on their unit ‘States of Matter’ over the past fortnight.

During weeks 6 and 7, the students focused on the reversibility of some materials to change between solids and liquids and back again, as well as the application of this knowledge in First Nations People. They have also started learning about the properties of gases and identifying gases in the environment. With the support of Mr Kerrins, the Grade 3-6 students have also participated in investigations on melting rates.

For the next fortnight, students will be focusing on all three states of matter (solids, liquids and gases) and how they can be represented by the Particle Model. The students will also investigate the effect of temperature on gases, and how materials can be grouped as solids, liquids and gases.

Focus vocabulary for the next fortnight:

Classify: To arrange things into groups with something in common.

Particle: A piece of matter.

Material: Something that is made from matter that can be used for a specific purpose or in the creation of objects; materials can be solids, liquids or gases and include a variety of substances, both natural and synthetic.
