Literacy

Our Core Knowledge unit about celebrations has continued to focus on a range of celebrations around the world. Students have explored traditions such as ‘Las Fallas’, a celebration in Valencia, and the ‘Rio Carnival’ in Rio De Janeiro. To showcase their learning, students created a Rio Carnival Mask. Next week students will continue to look at celebrations such as Christmas, MidSummer Festival and The Medellin Flower Fair.

We have been focusing on poetry in writing. Students have developed their understanding of different types of poetry such as neologisms and spoonerisms. We have had fun creating our own silly alliterations as well as using nonsense words for a humorous effect. Last week we studied the structure of Haikus and Diamantes. Students created their own haikus consisting of 3 lines, which include 5 syllables, 7 syllables and 5 syllables. To end the term we are reviewing persuasive language and the structure of persuasive letter writing.

Numeracy

In Maths students have been focusing on problem solving. We have identified language in worded problems that helps us choose the correct operation to solve the problem. For the remainder of the term we are focusing on reviewing concepts that we learnt earlier in the year such as measuring angles, calculating area and perimeter, exploring number sequences and subtraction problems involving renaming.

 SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

In SEL we have had a big focus on gratitude and positive self talk. Students have completed activities both reflecting on their own self talk and proving positive affirmations to their peers in the form of compliments.

Auslan

Auslan last week focused on story telling. We learnt that we can manipulate our hands to take the form of a character and use our body and facial expressions to give more depth to a story when recounting using Auslan. Students took turns using their hands, bodies and faces to tell familiar stories that included an animal.
