Literacy

In the last few weeks of this term, we have finished writing our information reports and have turned towards learning about poetry. In this unit, we started by looking at the writing syntax used, including the use of different writing techniques such as alliteration, hyperbole and metaphors. As we progress further, we will continue to explore poetry by looking at some famous examples of different techniques. We then aim to culminate our knowledge and have a go writing poems in the forms of haikus, diamantes and ballads.

We finished our History unit for the year and started on learning about famous and lesser known celebrations from around the world. This is a great way to explore different cultures and ways of life, including identifying why it is important to recognise and celebrate them. We have started with familiar celebrations, but have even looked into ones that you may never have even heard about such as The Monkey Buffet Festival and La Tomatina.

Daily Review is being used to ensure we don’t forget our writing techniques, as well as remember the structure of an information report, sentences and narrative writing.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have looked at long division. Our students have smashed their learning of it. Some say it is far easier than short division, and because of their learning they are now able to divide massive numbers by two digit numbers.

Our other numeracy topics focused around understanding time zones and the complicated maps where time zones are used. We have refreshed our knowledge of Daylight Savings Time and how some states in Australia have different times to other states. This has also been looked at from a worldwide scale and we have explored the Meridian lines, GMT and how some large countries have one time zone.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

We have been learning a lot about our emotions and how the chemicals in our brain affect them. We have also been working on building strategies to recognise how we are feeling. This has allowed us to explore music as a source of emotion as well as drawing and meditation breathing.

Auslan

In Auslan this last week we have looked at medical words, which was so much fun as the students loved describing how they are feeling. We will spend the last few weeks accumulating knowledge and telling stories through signing.

Sport

In 5/6 sport this past few weeks we have been refreshing the sports we played in Term 1: basketball, teeball, volleyball and cricket. This will allow us to practice these sports for next year.
