Year 6
Ms Riolo, Ms Miller & Ms Can
In our Literacy lessons, we have been exploring the structure and language features of a memoir. We learnt that a memoir is a personal story that reflects on a meaningful moment in the author's life. Memoirs often use descriptive language, vivid imagery, and emotive tone to help readers connect with the experience. We studied the way authors introduce their memories, build suspense, and create a lasting impression by using details that bring the moment to life. Understanding these techniques has been exciting, and we were able to recognise how important it is to capture the emotions and significance of a memory in our writing.
After gaining a deeper understanding of memoirs, we each choose our favourite memory from Year 6 to write about. Using the skills we had learned, we carefully crafted our stories, focusing on details that would transport our readers to that moment in time. We paid close attention to our choice of words, ensuring they reflected the feelings and atmosphere of the memory. Now, we are taking pride in our work by writing our memoirs in our neatest handwriting, ready to be displayed at our Year 6 graduation. This will be a special reminder of the memories we've created throughout the year and the growth we've experienced as writers.
In Numeracy, we have been putting our skills to the test by planning a big day out for Ms Riolo, Ms Miller, and Ms Can. To make our plans a reality, we worked in groups of 2-3 and used our knowledge of budgeting, timetabling, and persuasive techniques. First, we had to create a realistic budget for the day, making sure we didn’t spend more than what we had available. We also had to carefully plan out the timing of every activity, creating a timetable that would allow our teachers to enjoy their day without feeling rushed. This meant thinking about travel times, how long each activity would take, and how we could make the most of the time we had while staying within budget.
Now that our plans are in place, we are preparing a persuasive presentation to convince our teachers that our day out is the best choice. We are using persuasive techniques, like appealing to emotions and showing how our plan is both fun and practical, to persuade them to pick our itinerary. This project has not only helped us apply our numeracy skills in a real-life scenario but also taught us how to work together as a team and present our ideas in a clear and convincing way. We can't wait to see which day out our teachers will choose for their school holidays!
As we approach our Year 6 graduation, we’ve been busy preparing for this special day. One of the highlights has been learning our graduation song, "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors. We’ve been practicing the lyrics and the melody, making sure we sing our hearts out on the big day. The song is all about celebrating life’s great moments, and we feel it’s the perfect tune to mark the end of our journey through primary school. We’ve also been rehearsing how we’ll walk down the aisle to our seats, making sure everything runs smoothly. It's exciting to think about how we’ll look as we take our final steps as Year 6 students!
In addition to the song and the walk, we’re also preparing for the award ceremony, where we’ll receive recognition for all our hard work this year. We can’t wait to celebrate our achievements and share this moment with our friends, teachers, and families. The excitement is building as the big day gets closer, and we are all looking forward to making memories that will last a lifetime. It’s going to be an unforgettable day, and we’re counting down the days until we get to celebrate together!
