Welcome to our final Year 1 newsletter for 2024! As we wrap up an exciting year of learning and fun, we are eager to share with you all the highlights, achievements, and special moments our students have experienced. We are so proud of how far they’ve come and can’t wait to celebrate their progress in these last few weeks.
In Little Learners Love Literacy, we have completed all the Chitter Chatter sounds in Stage 7.3. Recently, we’ve focused on digraphs like /oi/ and /oy/ (e.g. coin and boy) and /oo/ (e.g. oops). We’ve also explored tricky spellings, such as /oul/ in would and /u/ in push.
In Writing, we've been having lots of fun learning about different types of poems! We've explored Cinquains, Rhyming Poems, and Acrostic Poems. The students have enjoyed creating their own poems about topics they love, like animals, nature, and their favourite things. It's been wonderful to see their creativity shine through as they express themselves in such fun and imaginative ways!
In Knowledge, we have been exploring celebrations from around the world. Students have learnt about various festivals and traditions celebrated in different countries. They also had the chance to share their own family celebrations with the class. After learning about the global Kite Festival, they created colourful kites, and after discovering Day of the Dead, a Mexican celebration, they designed creative skeleton crafts.
In Numeracy, we’ve been revising everything we’ve learnt throughout the year. Recently, we’ve been learning how to double numbers to find answers, which has been a fun and useful skill. We’ve also been working on creating equivalent number sentences, like 6 + 4 = 5 + 5, to understand how numbers can be added in different ways. It’s been exciting to see the students apply these new skills as they continue to strengthen their number sense.
On Tuesday 3rd December, we were thrilled to welcome Auslan Education Services, our Auslan program provider, to our school. Each class had the wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with a Deaf person. The team included a Team Leader, a Deaf team member, and an Interpreter. The Deaf team member shared insights into their life as a Deaf person, signed with the students, and answered questions. This experience was a valuable incursion for our students, offering a look at Deaf culture and providing an opportunity to learn about communication in a new and meaningful way.
As we approach the end of a wonderful year, we want to thank you for your continued support and involvement throughout 2024. It has been a year of growth, learning, and many special moments for our Year 1 students. We are so proud of their achievements and progress! We look forward to celebrating all the successes of this year and are excited for what’s to come. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful holiday season ahead!
