Year 6 News 

Numeracy 

In Mathematics for the past fortnight, the students have been learning about angle properties, and how to use these properties to solve problems involving unknown angles. Across the sequence, the year 6s estimated and measured angles in degrees, explored angles on a straight line and around a point, and identified vertically opposite angles. They applied these rules to calculate missing angles in a range of diagrams and developed their ability to explain and communicate their mathematical reasoning. Students will consolidate their learning through a summative assessment that recaps everything covered in the sequence of lessons. 

Next week, we will begin our next focus on how to plot and identify points on a cartesian plane. 

Literacy 

For our literacy lessons, students have continued studying How to Bee by Bren MacDibble through analyzing the text while developing their skills as writers. Students explored the features of news reports, including the importance of the 5Ws and 1H, and practiced writing engaging lead sentences. They also completed activities matching information from the text and organized key details into a news report structure. Students will use these skills to plan and develop their own news reports, applying their understanding of the text while considering how information is selected, organized, and presented to an audience.

Who We Are 

We have started our next unit of inquiry Who We Are, where students will explore how different cultures around the world are shaped by many factors. 

Central Idea: 

Different cultures are influenced by many factors. 

Throughout this unit, students will investigate: 

• Key aspects of a country geography, language, population, and more 
• Issues affecting the people challenges and opportunities communities face 
• Customs, values, rituals, celebrations, and lifestyle what makes each culture unique 
• Links between their chosen country and Australian traditions discovering connections and differences 

Each student will choose a country of their choice and become an expert! They will: 

1. Conduct research into the many fascinating aspects of their country 
2. Create a PowerPoint presentation to share their learning with the class 
3. Put together a mystery suitcase filled with clues and artifacts representing their country 
4. Present a showcase to our Year 4 students, celebrating what they've discovered 

This hands on inquiry will help students develop research skills, cultural awareness, and presentation confidence. We can't wait to see which countries they choose and what they discover!
