Our Learning and celebrations
Grandparents and Special Friends Afternoon
On Tuesday 28 July, our Prep students were delighted to welcome their grandparents to school for a very special Grandparents' Day celebration.
This event linked beautifully with our current Unit of Inquiry, "Where We Are in Place and Time," where students have been exploring families, family traditions, and how life has changed over time.
Prep A
In preparation for the day, the children interviewed their grandparents and discovered many interesting differences between school life today and when their grandparents were in primary school. It was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen family connections while learning about the past through personal stories.
Our grandparents arrived at the Prep Learning Centre at 2:30pm and were warmly welcomed into the classrooms for a special performance. The students did an outstanding job waiting quietly and patiently before the performance began, demonstrating the wonderful manners and self-control they have been practising throughout the year.
Prep B
The children proudly performed a selection of songs with accompanying actions, and each student spoke into the microphone to complete the sentence, "I love my grandparents because…". Their heartfelt words brought many smiles and a few happy tears.
To conclude the performance, the students sang ‘A Million Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman, incorporating Auslan signs they have been learning. This made the performance even more memorable and highlighted the importance of communicating in different ways.
Prep C
Following the performance, families enjoyed spending time together, with many grandparents taking photos and sharing this special occasion with their grandchildren. It was a joy to see the pride on the children's faces as they celebrated the important role grandparents play in their lives.
Thank you to all of our grandparents and special family members who joined us and helped make the afternoon so memorable. We are incredibly proud of our Prep students for the confidence, enthusiasm, and respect they showed throughout the celebration.
Inquiry- How the World Works
In Prep we have begun a new PYP Unit of Inquiry under the theme How the World Works.
Our central idea for this unit is:
“Climate and the types of materials available determine the structures that can be built.”
To get started, we spent some time unpacking our central idea and talking about what we thought it might mean. We looked at some of the key words and shared our first ideas before coming up with our own wonderings, things we would like to find out and learn more about during the unit.
Our wonderings have included questions like:
- How do you make solar panels?
- Why do some houses have really steep roofs?
- What materials are used to build houses in hot or cold places?
- Why are some houses built on stilts?
- What is the tallest building in the world?
We have also been exploring different types of homes and buildings from around the world and thinking about how they are designed to suit the environment they are built in. We have discussed igloos, chalets, machiyas, floating homes, rondavels and yurts, noticing how the climate, available materials and local surroundings influence their design.
Tropical Glow Prep Disco
What a fabulous afternoon of fun, dancing and laughter we had at the Tropical Glow Disco on Friday 7 August.
Organised by the wonderful BNPS Parents & Friends, the Prep Disco was a fantastic event for our children. The excitement was clear from the moment they arrived at school, dressed in their sparkly, glittery disco gear. They all looked amazing and were certainly ready to dance and party!
The children were excited to receive their very own tropical leis with flashing lights, which added an extra glow to the disco. They danced and sang along to all their favourite songs, and we saw some truly amazing dance moves! There were plenty of smiles, laughter and lots of energy as the children enjoyed the music and each other's company.
A special highlight was when Mrs Stoppa and Miss Maxwell joined the fun, busting out some dance moves and dancing alongside the Preps. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves and getting into the disco spirit!
A huge thank you to our wonderful BNPS Parents & Friends for organising such a fun and memorable event, and to all the parents who helped set up the space and transform it into a fantastic tropical disco.
